Ab durch die Hecke (original title Over the Hedge ) is an American animated film from 2006. It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed in Germany by United International Pictures . The film is based on the comic book Over the Hedge by Michael Fry and T. Lewis.
action
The raccoon Richie steals all of his supplies from the still hibernating bear Vincent. Richie is caught and forced by the bear to retrieve all supplies that have fallen from the cave onto a street and in front of a truck during the theft attempt, otherwise he will be eaten. In search of new supplies for Vincent, he meets the motley family of the turtle Verne, who have just ended their hibernation. This consists of turtle Verne, squirrel Hammy, skunk Stella as well as two opossums and five " porcupines ". (The latter are parents with three children: North American tree prickers .) With the help of this group, he wants to penetrate the newly built suburb behind the large hedge that was planted when the group was hibernating and which now borders the forest. Richie wants to steal the supplies for Vincent in the settlement.
After Richie has ousted Verne as the head of the family, who is rather skeptical about the plans, and has become the new leader of the group himself, the animals undertake several raids on people. However, they call an exterminator to have the thieves caught. This fails for the time being, and Richie gets everything he owes the bear. Verne, however, is still suspicious and wants to return the cart and the stolen food to the people. This leads to a dispute between Verne and Richie. When a moronic house dog - who just wants to play - interferes, a chase breaks out in which the cart breaks and some gardens are devastated. Richie inadvertently admits to taking advantage of the group. Verne explains that if he had only asked, they would have helped him as a family. Then they all sneak back into the settlement and steal the food Richie needed one more time. The entire family, apart from Richie, who brings the loot to Vincent, is caught by the exterminator. At the last moment, however, Richie decides in favor of the family, purposefully throws the supplies for Vincent and the cart onto the street in front of the exterminator's truck and returns to them. Vincent immediately takes up chase. Richie manages to free his family from the exterminator's van in a wild chase. When Richie and his family want to return through the hedge into the forest, Vincent appears there. You want to go back through the hedge, but there the exterminator and the annoying neighbor Gladys are waiting with a grass trimmer. There is a struggle for life in the hedge. Using a trick by Hamy, Vincent and the exterminator and Gladys are scorched by the exterminator's (illegal) traps. Gladys and the exterminator are to be arrested. The exterminator manages to escape just over a fence while Vincent is taken to an animal reserve. Richie is thus free and from now on lives with Verne's family.
Characters
Richie the raccoon is the main character in the film. Verne is an overprotective turtle and the leader of the family. Hammy belongs to the squirrel family and has extremely hyperactive traits. He is Richie's most loyal supporter. Stella is a skunk who finds the first creature in the Persian tomcat Tigerius who does not allow itself to be driven away by its stench because it has no sense of smell. Vincent is a big, rough bear. He loves a special kind of potato chips. Richie had to serve Vincent and always wake him from hibernation in spring.

Movie reviews
“Entertaining computer-made cartoon adventure in the style of a caper movie . The design turned out a little too streamlined, but the film always comes up with amusing ideas. "
“Despite this morally correct happy ending, the script takes a pleasant distance from the films from the Disney studio, which still persists in an unconvincing childlike scheme of good and bad. So no film only for very small viewers - which is meant as praise. "
“While the film doesn't quite match the delicious humor of ' Shrek ', it surpasses last year's summer hit ' Madagascar ' in terms of inventiveness . Every gag is right - even if you have seen some of them similarly elsewhere. Thus, 'Ab durch die Hecke' is a charming family film, the message of which no pedagogue would object to: Friendship and teamwork make life a lot easier. "
“Solid, consistent, cute. 'Ab durch die Hecke' is a decent action comedy for kids that has lots of pretty gags. ' Finding Nemo ' and other classics of computer animation, however, will not be contested by the refrigerator invasion. "
“Off through the hedge satisfies the desire for simple entertainment more than any of the studio's other animated films. So the film is definitely suitable for children's birthday parties, but in order not only to amuse the very little ones, the makers of the "Traumschmiede" have to come up with a lot more. "
