action

Roddy St. James, a spoiled rat in the London borough of Kensington , has just about everything a person needs to live: a gold cage, plenty of food and a television with DVD player that he has when his owners are out , used as a drive-in theater. The only thing he lacks are friends because the characters he messes with are not particularly talkative. All of this changes when one night the foul and soccer-loving sewer rat Sid comes out of the sink and plans to stay at Roddy's house. Roddy tries to pretend that the toilet is a jacuzzi in order to get rid of the uninvited troublemaker. However, Sid sees through the trick and instead flushes Roddy down the sewer. After a turbulent journey through the sewers, he sees that there is a city below that looks just like London. However, Roddy's greatest wish is to get back to the overworld . An old fur seal advises him to contact Rita, captain of the Jammy Dodger .

Roddy goes looking for Rita and finds her too. It has a supposedly real ruby , which the cold-blooded crook toad would like to own. In a chase, however, they manage to escape and at the same time steal the main cable for a machine from the toad, which is now inoperable. But they discover that the ruby is not real. Roddy and Rita agree that he would give her real rubies should she help him get home. On the way back to the upper world, they visit Rita's family. Roddy finds that, despite their rustic and financially tight lifestyle, Rita and her family are far richer than he ever was. The hot-headed toad has not given up either and wants to put into practice her plan to use the machine (which operates a closed sluice gate) to drown the entire city during the final of the World Cup so that he and his tadpoles can take the place of the rats can take over in the sewer system. For this purpose, however, he needs the main cable, which Rita has been using as a belt since her escape. But because his two henchmen, the stupid white laboratory rat Bleichie and the hot-headed rat Spike, are more than incapable, he sends his French cousin Le Frosch to kill the two friends and get the main cable back.

Roddy and Rita manage to escape him and his cronies, but during the chase the Jammy Dodger sinks into the depths of the sewer. However, Roddy and Rita get to the overworld with the help of a plastic bag that they use as a parachute. Arriving at Roddy's house, he hands Rita the promised real ruby from his owner's box. Rita also finds out that Roddy lives in a cage. However, he is too proud to admit that he is not free. Rita decides to return to the underworld, where Le Frosch and his cronies manage to capture Rita and bring back the main cable of the toad. This can get the deadly machine going again. Meanwhile, Roddy watches the World Cup with Sid. When the latter mentions by chance that Roddy shouldn't drink too much so that he doesn't have to go to the bathroom until half-time, Roddy realizes what “the toad's plan” is.

Roddy decides to give Sid his place in Kensington so that he can save the city, and especially Rita, from the flood. Roddy manages the unbelievable and he can also incapacitate the Toad and Le Frosch. Roddy now has everything he needs to be happy in the underworld, especially his Rita. Sid, on the other hand, is comfortable in his new home until his mistress brings him a "playmate": a cat.

Reviews

"Original, fast-paced animated film by the Aardman Company, which became famous with Wallace & Gromit , which effortlessly stands out from the inflationary cartoon average with angular characters, anarchic nuances and well-timed slapstick."

"Funny sayings churned out, delicious allusions and a final firework of action like in" Indiana Jones ": With this film you have to open your eyes and ears to not miss any of the humorous details [...] that are often on the edge of the picture or in the Hide background. Conclusion: With original characters and a lot of love for detail, digital fun sometimes develops action thriller qualities, which adults enjoy "

“However, one wonders even more boringly why one exchanged the plasticine for gigabytes and threw“ Flutsch und weg ”instead onto the highly competitive computer animation market - there are already far too many“ very nice ”average works here anyway. "
