The Guardians of the Light (original title Rise of the Guardians ) is a 2012 released 3D fantasy animated film by DreamWorks Animation based on William Joyce's book series "The Guardians of Childhood". Peter Ramsey made his directorial debut. Initially the film was called Die Glorreichen Five in Germany, but the distributor changed this for unknown reasons before it opened in theaters.

North Santa Claus , the Easter Bunny Bunny, Jack Frost , Tooth the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman named Sandy are the keepers of the light. Your job is to keep the hopes, dreams, memories, and most of all the beliefs of children alive. Opponents of the Guardians are the evil Pitch (known as the black man) and his army of nightmares . Pitch tries everything to scare the children into believing in him and give him enough power to destroy the Guardians for good.
Pitch Black is back again! The master of nightmares, also known as the black man , has had enough of his existence in the shade and under beds. Now he wants to be feared by the children. But the Guardians of Light are in his way. As Pitch's return does not remain hidden from them, they ask the man in the moon for help. He shows them a new guardian: the young, fun-oriented winter spirit Jack Frost, who, however, has no desire to take on this task.
When the tooth palace is attacked, Jack still flies with the Christmas sleigh. There the nightmares of Pitch flow towards the Guardians in the form of black, horse-like figures. They take all the teeth and all the little tooth fairies with them - except for one, which is saved by Jack. In the palace, the guardians meet Pitch, who tells them about his plan: he wants to destroy the belief in the guardians by taking away from the children what the guardians give them to remember. He then disappears and the palace begins to dissolve. The Guardians can just stop the decay by collecting their teeth themselves and giving the children something in return. Since the teeth also contain important childhood memories, Jack helps out because he wants to remind himself of his childhood again.
In the last children's room, the guardians meet again and are happy that the tooth palace was saved. They are discovered by the waking up child, whereupon the Sandman has to let him fall asleep again. In the mess that a greyhound creates in the room, the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and Santa Claus also fall asleep. Jack Frost and the Sandman then notice a nightmare that flies into another room and follow it. The sleeping boy's sister notices the troop, unintentionally activates a portal to Osterland with a Christmas ball and disappears there.
Meanwhile, Jack Frost and the Sandman destroy two nightmares. Pitch then appears, wondering what Jack has done since this wouldn't be his war. Jack and the Sandman can only hold their own against the overwhelming power of nightmares. Then the other Guardians arrive and can save Jack Frost, while the Sandman continues to fight the nightmares. Then the Guardians attack again, especially Jack. But before they can reach the Sandman, Pitch hits him with a fear arrow and crumbles into nightmare sand. Pitch sends a wave of nightmare sand on the rest of the Guardians, but Jack manages to destroy them. Then Pitch disappears again.
The Keepers return to Santa's workshop and mourn the loss of the Sandman. The lights of the children who still believe in the guardians gradually begin to go out again because they no longer have good dreams. But the guardians still have a chance to regain their faith: the next day is Easter. So they are now helping the Easter Bunny to paint his eggs. When they arrive in Osterland, they notice the little girl who has lost her way there. Because she is curious and playful, the keepers let her help until she finally falls asleep. Jack Frost brings her back to her bed after promising to return quickly. But then he hears a voice that lures him into Pitch's hiding place. This can prevent him from protecting the Easter preparations and can thus disrupt them. Jack now has his memories, but the children's beliefs are destroyed. The Guardians then send him away again. Disgusted by his actions, he wants to destroy his memories, but after a brief argument with Pitch, he looks at her. From them he draws new courage and flies to Pitch's hiding place. There he notices that the boy who discovered the Guardians has not yet lost the faith.
He flies to him immediately, but has to realize that the last child is also beginning to have doubts about the existence of the guardians. Since the boy can't see Jack, Jack signals him to prove that the Guardians exist. When Jack lets it snow in the room, the boy now believes in Jack, as he has heard many sayings about Jack Frost. Jack is able to convince the boy that the Guardians actually exist and together with the weakened Guardians who join them they call his friends together.
Pitch Black doesn't give up that easily, however, and pelts them with nightmare sands. The children overcome fear and this turns nightmare sand back into dream sand, which lets the children of the world sleep peacefully again. The Guardians are regaining their strength. But only through the resurrection of the Sandman from the dream sand can they finally defeat Pitch. Pitch is now afraid of the Guardians and is drawn into his hiding place by his own nightmares. Jack eventually joins the Guardians and pledges to help keep the children's faith in the Guardians.

A video game from the Japanese manufacturer D3 Publisher was released on November 20, 2012 in North America and on November 23, 2012 in Europe for Wii , Wii U , Xbox 360 , Playstation 3 , Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS . In the game, the player controls the Guardians in their fight against pitch.
