DreamWorks Animation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (DWA) is an American animation studio that mainly produces computer animation films.

history

The company emerged from the animation department of DreamWorks SKG and the company Pacific Data Images (PDI). They had produced cartoons and animated films together from 1997 onwards. After DreamWorks SKG took over the smaller company in 2000, the DreamWorks Animation business unit was created to coordinate the production of both classic and computer-generated animation films.

After the animation films achieved great success, the business unit DreamWorks Animation was separated from the parent company in 2004 and converted into the publicly listed company DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. in October. Since then, the company has been operating independently from the former parent company, but a contract was negotiated according to which DreamWorks SKG should distribute the following 12 films or all films by DreamWorks Animation that are released by the end of 2010.

After DreamWorks SKG was bought by Paramount Pictures at the end of 2005 , they took over the distribution of the animated films. Even after Paramount had sold DreamWorks SKG two years later, the contract remained.

DreamWorks Animation operates two studios: The DreamWorks feature animation studio in Glendale , California , and the former PDI studio in Redwood City , California, in the Silicon Valley region.

After work on the film Me and My Shadow , directed by Alessandro Carloni , was canceled in 2013 , Dreamworks Animation laid off 350 employees. At the beginning of 2015 it was decided to limit production to two films per year for cost reasons and to lay off another 500 employees. In addition, the PDI studio in Redwood City will be closed by the end of 2015.

In early 2016, Comcast acquired DreamWorks Animation for around $ 3.8 billion.
