Voltron: Legendary Defender (Original title: Voltron: Legendary Defender ) is an American animated series that was released on Netflix between 2016 and 2018 . The series is an adaptation of the anime - series Voltron , as Voltron: The Third Dimension and Voltron Force .

Five teenagers Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro are at a time when humanity is about to colonize the galaxy. They seem to be the only hope in the fight against King Zarkon and his alien army. Each of them controls a robot lion, which together make up the all-purpose weapon Voltron.

The series was produced and published for and on Netflix in 2016. The series was produced by DreamWorks Animation and World Events Productions and animated by Studio Mir . Netflix ordered 78 episodes of the series.
The series was first distributed on June 10, 2016 on Netflix. The second season was first released on January 20, 2017, the third season was first released on August 4, 2017, and the fourth season was first released in October 2017. Season five was released on March 2, 2018. The sixth season was released on June 15, 2018. Season seven was released on August 10, 2018, and the series ended with the eighth season on December 14, 2018.

Trivia
- The series contains several Easter eggs with clues and sidekicks to the series Voltron: Defenders of the Universe . So Shiro's counterpart from the parallel universe bears the name Sven, this is the name Shiro carried in the American version. In the first episode of season 8, Pidge watches an episode from the first Voltron series and is upset that it doesn't sound like that.
