Trolljäger: Tales from Arcadia (Original title: Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia ) is an American animated series that was produced between 2016 and 2018 for the video-on-demand service Netflix . The plot is based on the books of the same name by the Mexican writer and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro . The 2nd season is also to get a comic adaptation by Marc Guggenheim and Richard Hamilton . The series is the first of a series trilogy called Stories from Arcadia , which is to be continued and ended after the third season with the series 3 from above (2018-2019) and The Magicians (from 2020), which take place in the same universe.
action
15-year-old Jim lives in a suburb of Arcadia and discovers a mysterious amulet with magical powers. He finds out that he can transform himself into a kind of knight with the amulet. He gets a visit from the two trolls Blinky and AAARRRGGHH !!! who tell him that the amulet chose him. As a troll hunter, he is meant to protect the good trolls from the bad. Together with his friend Tobi, he is taken to the troll kingdom under the city, where the trolls own a town called Herzstein-Trollmarkt . There he is trained and is supposed to prevent the evil trolls from freeing their leader Gunmar from the dark land. In addition, he also has to face everyday challenges such as school or love.
Characters
- James "Jim" Lake Jr. is the protagonist of the series and the first human trollhunter. In his private life he cares a lot about his friends and has to face problems in school and relationships and on the other hand he has to protect the world of the good trolls and train for them. This double life doesn't always make life easy for him.
- Tobias "Tobi" Domsalski (in the original: Tobias "Toby" Domzalski ) is Jim's best friend and is very self-confident. However, he is also very energetic at times. But he is completely fascinated by the world of trolls and supports Jim in all his tasks.
- Walter Strickler is Jim's history teacher who is hiding a dark secret and gaining the trust of Jim.
- Blinky is a cute six-eyed troll who trains Jim. He's very warm and wise and goes out of his way to help Jim.
- AAARRRGGHH !!! is a stout, friendly troll who has a lot in common with Blinky. As a child he was betrayed by his queen and handed over as a warrior for Gunmar. But he remembers that he was kidnapped.
- Klara Nunez (originally: Claire Nuñez ) is Jim's girlfriend. She is very lively, intelligent, nice, funny and sometimes a little sarcastic. Their little baby brother Erik ( Enrique ) is kidnapped and replaced by a shapeshifter called NotErik ( NotEnrique ). To save their brother, they have to go to the Darklands. She is interested in books and is good at karate and gymnastics.
- Vendel is the head of the troll city. He's an old troll who seems a little pessimistic at times, but still shows his hope in Jim.
- Bular is the son of Gunmar, who turns out to be a strong and brutal warrior and, together with his subordinates, tries to free his father.
- Dr. Barbara Lake is Jim's mother, who tries to protect him and is very busy with her job as a doctor. Her husband left her when Jim was five years old. Because of her job she has to go away a lot, which gives Jim more freedom.
- Gunmar is the leader of the evil trolls (Gumm-Gumms) and lives in the dark land. He is very strong and without scruples and does everything possible to achieve his goals.
- Otto Scaarbach is a German shapeshifting polymorph who can transform into any person. He is also the leader of the Janus Order.
- Draal is a former enemy of Jim and Kanjigar's son. After a failed fight against Jim, Draal moved to Jim's basement after he was temporarily expelled from Herzstein Troll Market.
- Kanjigar was Draal's father and a former troll hunter. After a fight against Bular, he jumped into the sunlight to protect the amulet and turned to stone. He was the strongest troll hunter before Jim.
- Nomura is a female shapeshifter and owner of the Arcardia Museum.
- Angor Rot (often: Angor) is a troll revived by Strickler. He was controlled by the Inferna Corpula Ring and was a former "troll hero" ( as he was called by the trolls. He was never a troll hunter )
Production and publication
The series has been produced by Double Dare You and DreamWorks Animation in the United States on behalf of Netflix since 2016 . So far, 2 seasons with 39 episodes have been created. A third and final season has been announced for 2018. It was published on May 25, 2018 and thus ended. The series universe is covered in series 3 from above (2018 to 2019) and Wizards (2020), which appeared under the same subtitle Stories from Arcadia .
The series was first released on Netflix on December 23, 2016 in multiple languages, including German. The German premiere on television took place on November 19, 2017 on Super RTL . Further repetitions were also carried out on Toggo plus . The series was also released on DVD and adapted as a radio play on CD . In addition to Netflix, the series is also offered on Amazon Video .

The series was nominated for nine Daytime Emmy Awards in 2017 and won six of them. The series was also nominated four times for the Annie Award 2017 and won three times in the categories of character design , animation and storyboard . The series was also nominated for the Saturn Awards in the animation category.

The series was mostly positively received. On Rotten Tomatoes , Season 1 got an average rank of 7.8 out of 10. The Metascore on Metacritic is 69%.
