Lauren Tom (born August 4, 1961 in Chicago , Illinois , United States ) is a Sino-American actress and voice actress .

Life and accomplishments

Lauren Tom was born in Chicago in 1961, where she grew up a Catholic in a largely Jewish neighborhood. In her youth, she was raised many times because of her Chinese origins, which led her to develop a more introverted personality. Nevertheless, she devoted herself to dance from an early age and was able to perform with the ensemble of the musical A Chorus Line at the age of 17 when this formation was on tour. She was only a few months on Broadway , where she could be seen in Doonesbury, among others, and was allowed to work with well-known theater directors such as Peter Sellars and JoAnne Akalaitis at various venues. In addition to her stage work, she also started an extensive film and television career. So from 1982 she worked in guest roles, later in supporting roles in television series and films, before she was offered larger roles in mostly television productions, such as The Joy Luck Club (1993). In the 1990s she also played in some successful television series such as Friends (1995/96) and increasingly worked as a voice actress for various film and series projects. One of her better-known language roles is that of the Martian Amy Wong in Futurama (1999-2003 and since 2010).

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Tom married Glenn Lau-Kee in 1982; since 1999 she has been married to the actor Curt Kaplan, with whom she has two sons.
