Mr. Jones has a manic-depressive illness (so-called bipolar disorder ). Great heights are followed by deep crashes. After his introduction to psychiatry , the doctor treating him, Dr. Elizabeth 'Libbie' Bowen and himself have a romantic relationship that goes beyond the purely professional patient-doctor relationship . This relationship between the two, which is not allowed in this way, ultimately has serious consequences.

In preparation for the film, Richard Gere, Mike Figgis and Eric Roth have dealt very intensively with manic-depressive illness (bipolar disorder), and have really researched and studied it. Richard Gere met with several patients who suffer from or suffered from this condition.

On the Web site Rotten Tomatoes , the film reached 46 percent of the reviewers a positive rating.
The lexicon of international film ruled that the script is conventional, but that the director and the actors break this conventional. However, they would fail because of the “ compromise between aspiration and public appeal ”.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
