Teen Titans is an animated series produced by Warner Bros. Animation from 2003 to 2006. It is based on the superhero team Teen Titans by DC Comics . So far, only the first two seasons of RTL II have been broadcast in Germany. The series has not been broadcast on German television since 2007, and seasons 3–5 and the film "Trouble in Tokyo" have not been dubbed in German to this day.

content

The Teen Titans consist of Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy and Cyborg. They are all still teenagers and use their superpowers to protect the world from evil forces. So they compete against megalomaniac criminals and hostile aliens.

Other characters from the DC Comics appear in the series, such as Hotspot , Aqualad and Terra . The cities of Metropolis and Gotham City are also mentioned, and there are allusions to the Wayne Enterprise company. Robin is Dick Grayson , the very first Robin.

Teen titans

  • Robin is the leader of the Teen Titans. In contrast to the other Titans, he has no superpowers of his own, but has to rely on his fighting and analytical skills and a combat belt with special gadgets. Robin learned his fighting techniques from Batman . Despite his determined façade during emergencies, he is very reserved and solitary in personal matters and only manages to admit his affection to Starfire late.
  • Hailing from the distant planet Tamaran, Starfire came to Earth as a prisoner with minimal knowledge of the human way of life, where she first laid half a city to rubble and then joined the Titans. She is the most sensitive member of the Titans. Her powers allow her super strength, flight ability, and power to fight opponents; later she can even fire beams of energy from her eyes. She has a romantic interest in Robin, but Robin does not want to admit it for a long time. Her Tamaran name "Koriand'r" can only be heard once in the series from her former tutor.
  • Raven is the most mysterious and withdrawn member of the Titans. She is a half demon , her father is the demon Trine, the essence of evil. It is their destiny to function as a portal for him to ring in the end of the world, which the Titans prevent. Because of this determination and her effort to keep her dark side under control, Raven is a loner by nature. She stands out for her dry sense of humor and her almost life-weary and lethargic behavior. There's a kind of love-hate relationship between her and Beast Boy. With her telekinetic abilities, Raven can move inanimate objects and use them as weapons in combat.
  • Cyborg is a mixture of man and machine. He has numerous mechanical enhancements such as a sound wave cannon in his arm. A special personality trait is that he is often too proud of the equipment and machines he has designed himself, such as E.g. the T-car. It is his dearest wish to maintain or even regain his humanity.
  • Beast Boy has the ability to transform into any animal imaginable. He often feels misunderstood because of his infantile humor, obsession for veganism, and disregard for his skills. That is why he often tries to attract attention in spectacular solo efforts. In Terra he finds a like-minded person whom he also falls in love with. Her betrayal of the Titans and her subsequent death hits him hardest. Before joining the Teen Titans, he was a member of the superhero group Doom Patrol.
  • Terra is a mysterious girl who only later becomes a member of the Teen Titans. She has the ability to control any form of earth and use it against her opponents. Since she does not control her powers at first, Terra is an emotionally unstable person, which makes her very susceptible to psychological manipulation. So she finally betrays the Titans to Slade. It is only when it is almost too late that she realizes her mistake and sacrifices herself to save her friends.

Titans East

  • Bumblebee : A young superhero with the ability to shrink and fly using insect wings. Initially an infiltrator at HIVE Academy, she later becomes the leader of Titans East.
  • Aqualad is an Aquarian whose hometown is Atlantis . In addition to his strength and ability to exist underwater and communicate telepathically with marine animals, he also has aquakinetic skills.
  • Speedy is a person who, like Robin, uses modern technology in the form of a bow and an arsenal of high-tech arrows in combat.
  • Mas y Menos (Spanish: "More or Less"): Two twins from Guatemala with the gift of super speed, which they can only activate when they come into contact. Although they understand English quite well, they only speak Spanish. They're also the youngest Titans on the series.

Enemies

  • Slade is the Teen Titans' main enemy in seasons 1 and 2. In the fight against them he relies on devious methods and manipulates everything and everyone without scruples in order to realize his plans. So he forces Robin to become his student; when this fails, he turns to Terra, who also becomes his student, but ultimately turns against him and lets him plunge into a lava lake. In the 4th season Slade is brought back to life by Trigon and receives demonic powers; but when Trine cheats him of his soul, Slade and the Titans oppose them and contribute decisively to their destruction.
For copyright reasons, Slade's original name of the character "Deathstroke" was replaced by his civilian name in the series. In addition, he is portrayed in the series not as a mercenary , but as a professional criminal.
  • HIVE Academy is a training facility for young super villains . It is led first by an old lady and then in the 3rd season of Brother Blood. The best known graduates are Gizmo, Jinx and Mammoth, who later form the formation "Hive Five".
  • Brother Blood is the main enemy of the Teen Titans and especially Cyborg's in season 3. He runs the HIVE Academy and controls his students by controlling their thinking with his hypnotic superpower. He is also very skilled in various martial arts. Fascinated by cyborgs properties, he begins to use its technology for his dark purposes and finally lets himself be converted into a cyborg .
  • Jinx is a young witch with the ability to use reality manipulation to inflict bad luck on her opponents. She is the leader of the group "Hive Five" but shows little interest in her reputation as a super villain. In the episode “Lightspeed” she meets Kid Flash, an honorary teen titan, who finally persuades her to leave the “Hive Five”. At the end of season 5 in "Titans Together" she finally fights with Kid Flash on the side of the Titans.
  • Trigon is a demon and the father of Raven. In season 4, he's the Teen Titans' main enemy.
  • Brotherhood of Evil consists of four members: The Brain, the intelligent gorilla Monsieur Mallah, Madame Rouge and General Immortus. Originally the arch enemies of Doom Patrol, Beast Boy's original superhero team, they are the Titans' main enemies in Season 5.
  • Red X was originally a cover identity for Robin during an unsuccessful attempt to find out more about Slade's plans. In the third season, however, a stranger appropriates this identity. Red X takes on the role of an antihero and occasionally supports the Titans. Red X is a martial artist and acrobat like Robin, but his main weapon is the combat suit originally developed by Robin. The combat suit has multifunctional X-shaped projectiles firing projectiles, the z. E.g .: serve as projectiles, shackles, door openers, and enable its wearer to teleport.
  • Video Freak (in English Control Freak ) is a couch potato, film fanatic and comic relief villain of the series, who can manipulate reality using his remote control according to his ideas. However, he does not use his possibilities to enrich himself, but to prove himself superior to the Teen Titans, which means that the Titans ultimately do not take him as seriously as other super villains.
  • Blackfire is the older sister of Starfire and, like her, comes from the planet Tamaran. Unlike her peace-loving sister, she is a selfish troublemaker.
  • Psycho Paul ( Mad Mod ) is a very old, Anglophile madman who mainly becomes an enemy of the Teen Titans for the envy of their youthful vitality. He is very tech-savvy and likes to create illusionary worlds.
  • Cinderblock ("concrete block") is a humanoid creature made of concrete who acts as a handyman for various antagonists in the series.

Despite their common origin from the DC Comics , Teen Titans has no relationship whatsoever with the animated series Batman and its offshoots from 1992-2006. The voice actors of the original “Teen Titans” have a joint appearance in the (not published in German) Justice League episode “Wild Cards” as members of the Royal Flush Gang there; some of the characters were also designed based on the speakers' physical appearance. Likewise, Michael Rosenbaum plays the role of Wally West, the Kid Flash and Flash in both series .

music

The music for the series was composed by Lolita Ritmanis , Kristopher Carter and Michael McCuistion . There is an English and a Japanese version of the theme song, both by Puffy AmiYumi . The English language is used for more serious episodes, the Japanese for more humorous episodes. There are also special variants that you get to hear from time to time, such as the Larry version (episode Auf Biegen und Brechen , sung by the manager of Puffy AmiYumi) or a literal translation of the Japanese series title song, the Beast Boy in the movie Trouble sings karaoke in Tokyo .

Adaptation

There's the Teen Titans Go! which is based on this television series and is kept in the same style.

Introduced in the third season, Titans Más y Menos are the first original characters from the television series who also appeared in the mainstream comic series , in Teen Titans # 38 from September 2006. A second character who made his leap into the DC main universe is Billy Numerous, a teenage villain with the ability to reproduce himself ( Catwoman # 78, April 2008).

Sequels

In 2012, a series of short films starring the Teen Titans (here in chibi form, but again with their original voice actors) were produced and broadcast for Cartoon Network . On June 8th, due to the success of these shorts, the decision was made to release the series under the title Teen Titans Go! to put the focus back on comedy rather than the original series.
