Deathstroke is a cartoon character from the US comic book publisher DC Comics .

history

The title character of the comics, Deathstroke, is a creation by the author Marv Wolfman and the illustrator George Pérez , who first introduced him in 1980 in the Teen Titans series . In this series, Deathstroke first appeared in The New Teen Titans Annual # 2 from 1981 - initially under the name Terminator. From then on, Deathstroke figured as a constant opponent of the title heroes, a group of youthful crime fighters. The name Terminator - although Deathstroke had it four years before the release of the first Terminator film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger - is no longer used in relation to Deathstroke, presumably to avoid disputes over the rights to the name.

The subject of the Titans adventures were mostly attempts by Deathstrokes to murder and / or capture the members of the group in order to collect the bounty that was put on the teenagers by an opposing organization. Over time, however, he began to work with the Titans more and more often to avert greater threats, eventually becoming something of an antihero . Due to its immense popularity with the readers of the Titans series - the best-selling comic book series in the USA at the time - it was decided to give the "Terminator" its own series under the title Deathstroke .

The two characters Deadpool and Taskmaster - the latter was also developed by George Pérez - whose adventures appear in Marvel Comics , bear a striking resemblance to Deathstroke . Both have a lot in common with Wilson in appearance, approach, character and demeanor.

Character history

Slade Wilson ran away from home at the age of 15 and joined the American army by pretending to those responsible for the recruitment offices that he was of legal age. As a marine, he took part in the Korean War, where he distinguished himself by "special bravery before the enemy". After returning from the war, he took part in a course for the next generation of officers, where he met the instructor Adeline Kane, who was several years his senior. They both fell in love and eventually got married. The marriage resulted in three children, the sons Grant and Josef and the daughter Rose.

Wilson eventually took part in the Vietnam War as an officer . During this time he signed up for a secret experiment by the army, in the course of which he was given a newly developed serum that was supposed to increase his natural resistance. Initially, Wilson reacted extremely badly to the serum, was hospitalized and temporarily even for nursing care . For a short time he could neither walk nor speak. When he finally recovered, however, he found that his physical strength, reflexes and endurance had increased to superhuman levels. In addition, he now had an above-average efficient immune system , which meant that even the most severe injuries healed quickly. Wilson hid his newly acquired skills from his superiors and continued his career as an officer. Wilson was finally discharged from the army because of an unauthorized solo attempt against a Viet Cong camp .

As a result, he embarked on a career as a big game hunter in Africa and began to work in secret under the code name "Deathstroke" as a mercenary and contract killer . This activity eventually made Wilson's family - who knew nothing of his double life - the target of the criminal named Jackal, who worked for one of Deathstroke's goals.

In other media

Teen titans

In the animated series Teen Titans , Deathstroke appears under the name Slade . In the original it is dubbed by Ron Perlman . The renunciation of the name Deathstroke is due to an edition of the American television, according to which names that refer to the subject of death are to be avoided in children's series. In addition, his role was converted from a mercenary to a master criminal. His goals are the annihilation of the Titans and the conquest of San Francisco , although his motives remain unclear.

His personality and skills are very similar to those in the comics, but unlike there, Slade has an almost inexhaustible reservoir of robotic minions and technology that he uses for his deeds.

In the episodes of the first two seasons he fights the Titans with the help of like-minded criminals like Mammoth or Jinx or with honest characters that he manipulates for his own purposes, like the heroine Terra. At the end of the second season, Slade is plunged into a volcano by Terra, who has freed herself from his spell, and apparently dies in its lava.

In the third season, he only appeared in flashback and dream sequences. In the fourth season, Slade finally returns. As it turns out, he had actually died in the volcano's lava, but had been brought back to life by the demon Trine - the main villain of the fourth season - and was persuaded to cooperate by offering him his body back in exchange for his services . In the end he takes the side of the Titans and helps to defeat this trine and manages - after he has got his body back - to escape.

Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark

In the fourth season of the series Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark , a mercenary named Deathstroke ( Antonio Sabato junior ) appeared in the episode A Lovely Couple, who has little in common with the cartoon character except the name. Unlike Slade Wilson, this Deathstroke is a scientist with magnetic powers who uses a special suit to control his powers.
