The Honey Ordinance is an ordinance issued by the Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture in January 2004 on the basis of the authorization in Section 19 Paragraph 1 No. 1, 2 b), 3, 4 a) and c) and on the basis of Section 44 Paragraph 1 No. 2 LFGB in the version of the announcement of September 9, 1997 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 2296 ) was issued. It replaced the old honey ordinance of December 13, 1976 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 3391 ).

It is a regulation from the legal area of food law , which regulates the minimum quality requirements and labeling for honey . So writes the Honey Regulation, in addition to the food labeling regulation , sales names for honey on the origin, production, supply form and purpose of the honey before. For example, substances may not be removed or added to the honey. Only pollen may be withdrawn from the honey, which in this case has to be marketed under the trade name “filtered honey”.

The country of origin in which the honey was produced must also be specified. If there are several countries of origin, the following information is allowed instead:

  • "Mixture of honey from EU countries",
  • "Mixture of honey from non-EU countries",
  • "Mixture of honey from EU countries and non-EU countries".

Honey that was produced for industrial purposes or as an ingredient in further processed foods must be labeled with the note “only for cooking and baking”.

Its scope includes every honey and honey every product in the intended as a food professional to be placed on the market.
