The New 52

Identification of comic books

In The New 52 (dt. "The New 52") there was a restart of almost all comic serials of the US publisher DC Comics . In the English-speaking world, this change was made in August 2011. The publication of the German-language editions began in June 2012.

History and course of origin

The American mini-series Flashpoint (2011) created the narrative basis for the restart of almost all of DC Comics' superhero series. The stories of the three labels DC , Vertigo and WildStorm now play in the same comic universe.

The restart took place in a first shaft ( First Wave ) for all the tracks at the same time and has been marked by a renumbering of the corresponding title from 1 to. The number of monthly titles has been set at 52, although this number has already played a role in the context of the weekly series 52 (2006/2007) in the past . In addition to series on classic characters from the publisher - Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman - completely new titles such as Justice League Dark were also released .

Some of the series were discontinued after just a few issues (e.g. Blue Beetle / 16 issues or Justice League International / 12 issues) and replaced by new series of other waves of publication (previously the second to fourth wave) (e.g. GI Combat / Second Wave or The Phantom Stranger / Third Wave).

The publisher's non-superhero titles were not affected by the restart.

Meaning in the DC Universe

Since the DC universe was given the opportunity to start at "zero" (or a number 1) as part of the restart, complete storylines and timelines changed. In addition, some new prehistory was written. The Justice League is not a state association of superheroes, but rather a loose association of super beings who all have to deal with the same problem, namely that the world sees them as a threat. In the first new editions, only five years have passed since superheroes first appeared and politicians still don't really know how to deal with them - for example, the UN, as a counterpart to the Justice League, is founding a Justice League International that is under their control stands.

The continuity of the Batman-related titles largely corresponds to that which has already been established. However, the stories of Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain have been deleted as Batgirls, while the previously non- canon Carrie Kelley has now been included in these.

In addition, Clark Kent (Superman) and Lois Lane are not married or friends, and he begins a relationship with Wonder Woman. Clark's adoptive parents passed away in the new universe. The background stories u. a. by Starfire , Guy Gardner and Tim Drake have been significantly changed.

German-language publications

Selected series of the new start appear in Germany, responsible for this is Panini Comics from Stuttgart . The five main series Batman , Batman: The Dark Knight , Superman , Green Lantern and Justice League form a focus . These appear as monthly issue series, each beginning with a number 1. Other series such as Animal Man , Catwoman or Red Lanterns appear in the form of special volumes about twice a year. For the "zero numbers" (# 0 of the series) there were some special issues.

The titles of previously published US series are shown in italics below . As part of cross-series stories (e.g. Night of the Owls ), individual issues of other series are also published.

The Superman special volumes contain the US series Superman , the Green Lantern special volumes contain the US series Green Lantern: New Guardians, and the Batman Incorporated special volumes contain the US series Batman Incorporated .

Further development

Marvel Comics , DC Comics' competitor in the comic market, led Marvel NOW! a comparable new beginning of his comic stories one year later in autumn 2012.

In May 2016, after 52 months, all DC comic series were reset to zero and restarted as part of the DC Rebirth , with the series Action Comics and Detective Comics continuing with the original numbering (but 52 numbers further).
