action

The singer Joan Spruance feels threatened by an unknown perpetrator who ransacked her apartment. She moves into the house of her sister Andy Ellerman, who is traveling. Spruance hires safety expert Harry Bliss, who also trains dogs, to train a guard dog for them. She gets the German shepherd Dieter from Bliss. The dog thinks every woman is in heat and harasses her.

Bliss and his wife of Japanese descent regularly visit a marriage counselor to help save the marriage. Bliss, who calls his wife Fujiyama , flirts with his colleague.

Andy Ellerman wants to publish a book about her marriage to the seedy businessman Redmond Layls. After a foot operation, she finds herself in a psychiatric clinic, but can call her sister for help. Laurence Moncrief, Layls' attorney, blackmailed Bliss into stealing Andy's manuscript. However, the two get closer.

Joan sneaks into the clinic and takes Andy's place. Andy escapes from the clinic while Moncrief arrives to get Andy to make some changes to the book manuscript. During the conversation, Joan initially hides under the covers so that she cannot be seen.

After Joan identifies herself, the check presented to Harry is discussed. Harry tears up the check and asks Moncrief to confirm that Harry isn't just after the money. Moncrief suggests starting the truth-finding with Bliss being married. Joan runs away.

Andy meets Redmond at the hospital entrance, with whom she reconciles. The couple come into the room where a bodyguard has already brought Harry. Joan is angry about her sister's decision and thinks it is a shame .

A little later a colleague brings Joan home in his car. Bliss follows the car. Joan's colleague suddenly turns, parks in a remote place and reveals that he has adored Joan for years. He harasses Joan, who is saved by the arriving Harry. A police helicopter arrives, Joan yells at Harry and the police for being mad at "all the men". Harry reveals his real name, the two kiss.

In the final scene, Joan sings in a concert hall. Harry appears late but with a bouquet of flowers. Joan sees him and they both smile at each other.

Reviews

  • Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post on July 18, 1992 that insignificance was something one would not expect from a Jack Nicholson film. The participation of Beverly D'Angelo, Paul Mazursky, Saul Rubinek and Harry Dean Stanton would lead to a different outcome. The film is original and still bad, which Hinson thinks is mysterious . The chemistry between Jack Nicholson and Ellen Barkin is wrong.
  • Lexicon of international films : Despite a few silliness, mostly amusing comedy with two brilliant main actors who play their roles on the verge of self-parody.

Awards

Jack Nicholson was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in 1993.
