Sievi Church

Sievi [ ˈsiɛvi ] is a municipality in northwestern Finland. It is located in the coastal hinterland of the North Ostrobothnian landscape , around 150 km away between the cities of Oulu and Vaasa .

In addition to the church village (Finnish kirkonkylä ) Sievi, it includes the places Asemakylä (German “Bahnhofsdorf”), Jokikylä, Jyrinki, Järvikylä, Kiiskilä, Kirkonkylä, Kukonkylä, Leppälä, Lahdenperä and Sievinkylä.

Sievi is one of the main Laestadian settlement areas in Finland. Since the families of this Protestant revival movement are often very large, the population of Sievi has an average age well below the national mean; The below-average unemployment rate of the community can also be traced back to the work ethic of the Laestidians.

The dominant political force in rural Sievi is the Center Party . In the 2008 local elections, she received over 70% of the vote, one of her best results in Finland. It has 21 of 27 members of the local council. The left-wing alliance won three seats , two for the conservative National Collection Party and one for the right-wing populist “ True Finns ”. The Social Democrats , on the other hand, failed with a vote of just 2.6% when they entered the local council.
