Kalajoki [ ˈkɑlɑjɔki ] is a city in northern Finland , named after the Kalajoki River that flows through it. It is located in the northern Ostrobothnian landscape and has 12,387 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). Kalajoki lives mainly from tourism, agriculture and the metal industry. The place can be reached via federal highways 8 and 27. The nearest train station is in Ylivieska, 38 kilometers away. Several times a day there are bus connections Kokkola - Kalajoki - Raahe - Oulu. The nearby port of Rahja is a predominantly industrial transport hub. Just outside of Kalajoki you will find the sand dunes ('Hiekkäsärkät'), which are important for tourism, with beaches, restaurants, holiday quarters and the JukuPark holiday amusement park.
In 1973 the municipality of Rautio was incorporated into Kalajoki, and Himanka followed at the beginning of 2010 .
