Jussi Petteri Jokinen (born April 1, 1983 in Kalajoki ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Kärpät Oulu in the Finnish Liiga since January 2019 . The left winger previously played over 1,000 games for nine teams in the National Hockey League between 2005 and 2018 , most of them for the Carolina Hurricanes , Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars . With the Finnish national team he won the silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2016 World Championships .
Career
Jokinen was already represented in the Finnish Junior League, where he was voted best U-17 player in 2000. He started his professional career in 2001 at Oulun Kärpät in the Finnish SM-liiga , where he played until 2005. In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , the Dallas Stars had secured the rights to him in place of 192. With the Kärpät he became Finnish ice hockey champion in 2004 and 2005, and in 2005 he came second in the IIHF European Champions Cup .
In the 2004/05 season Jokinen was able to record 23 goals and 24 assists , making it among the top six strikers of the SM Liiga. From the 2005/06 season he played for the Dallas Stars.
As the Shootout King, he made a name for himself during his first season with the Dallas Stars by converting nine out of nine shootouts. Only another Finn, goalkeeper Vesa Toskala ( San Jose Sharks ), was able to finish this run. Jokinen topped the 2005-06 regular season shootout rankings with ten goals in thirteen attempts. Three of these goals were decisive. In his first season in the NHL he scored 17 goals and 38 assists, in the play-offs there were two goals and one assist in five games. On points Jokinen was able to finish the season as the fourth-best rookie . At the trade deadline of the 2007/08 season he was transferred from Dallas to the Tampa Bay Lightning along with Jeff Halpern and Mike Smith . In return, Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist came to Texas.
A year later, on February 4, 2009, Jokinen was put on the waiver list. Three days later, the Lightning exchanged him for Wade Brookbank and Josef Melichar of the Carolina Hurricanes . On April 3, 2013, he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins and signed a one-year contract there. After this was not renewed following the 2013/14 season, he joined the Florida Panthers in July 2014 . There the attacker signed a four-year contract, with the Panthers paying him the remaining year of his contract in June 2017 (buy-out) . As a result, he was signed to the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent in July 2017 . After 14 games in which Jokinen scored an assist, the Oilers transferred him to the Los Angeles Kings for Michael Cammalleri on November 14, 2017 . The Kings, in turn, wanted to send the attacker to the American Hockey League almost two months later via the waiver , where he was signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets . He was also only briefly active in the Blue Jackets until he was handed over to the Vancouver Canucks with Tyler Motte at the trade deadline in February 2018 . In return, Thomas Vanek moved to Columbus. In Vancouver, he ended the 2017/18 season, but did not receive a continuing contract from the Canucks.
Jokinen then moved back to Europe, where he joined EHC Kloten from the Swiss League in November 2018, where he initially signed a contract with a term of one month. He returned to his training association in Oulu in January 2019 and received a new two-year contract there in June 2019.
International
In 2001 (U18), 2002 (U20) and 2003 (U20) Jokinen competed in the Junior Ice Hockey World Championship . In 2003 he was the top scorer of his team. Jokinen represented Finland at the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2005 (seventh place) and 2006 (3rd place) as well as at the 2006 Winter Olympics (2nd place). At the Olympic Games in 2014 he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team and also represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
