Michael "Mike" Cammalleri (born June 8, 1982 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of Italian - Polish - Czechoslovak descent who was last under contract with the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League until July 2018 and for them on the position of left winger played. With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2007 World Cup .
Career
Cammalleri first played three years from 1999 to 2002 at the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . He received numerous honors in his last two seasons, as the fast striker was able to score more than one point per game over the course of the season. Therefore, the Canadian was selected in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in 49th place by the Los Angeles Kings .
After his third year in the college leagues, Cammalleri decided to switch to the professional camp for the 2002/03 season and waived another year at the University of Michigan. In the first professional season, his bets were limited to 41, including 28 for the Los Angeles Kings . These had initially used the center with the Manchester Monarchs in the American Hockey League , but after 13 games in which he had scored 20 points, they appointed him to the NHL squad. After a concussion in the game against the San Jose Sharks on January 28, 2003, the season ended prematurely for him. For the 2003/04 game year Cammalleri returned to the Kings squad, but spent the season between the NHL and AHL. Due to the failure of the entire NHL season 2004/05 , he played another year in the AHL and at the end of the season secured the Willie Marshall Award for the most dangerous player in the league. He was also the second best scorer in the league behind Jason Spezza . After resumption of the NHL game operations for the 2005/06 season , the Canadian was finally able to fight for a regular place in the squad of the Los Angeles Kings, which was also favored by the new rules, as more technically savvy players benefited from it. In his first full season he reached 55 points in 80 games before breaking through the following year with 80 points in 81 games. After moderate performance in the 2007/08 season , in which the Kings again failed to make it into the playoffs, management transferred him to the Calgary Flames as part of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft .
In the 2008/09 season he was in 81 games for the Flames, scored 39 goals and collected 82 points. But his contract was not renewed and Cammalleri signed on July 1, 2009 with the Canadiens de Montréal . In his first season in Montréal he scored fewer points than last year, but during the playoffs he drew attention to himself with 13 goals and 19 points in 19 games and was Canadien's best scorer.
On January 12, 2012, the Habs transferred him to the Calgary Flames together with goalkeeper Karri Rämö and a five-round suffrage in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for René Bourque , Patrick Holland and a second-round suffrage in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . After living in Calgary for two years, he signed a five-year contract with the New Jersey Devils in July 2014 . In June 2017, however, the Devils bought him out of his remaining two contract years (buy-out) , so that from then on he was looking for a new employer as a free agent , which he found on July 1, 2017 in the form of his ex-team in Los Angeles Kings found. After 15 games in which Cammalleri scored seven points, the Kings transferred him to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Jussi Jokinen . In Edmonton, he finished the 2017/18 season, but received no further contract.
International
Cammalleri first appeared for his home country at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2001 and was able to win the bronze medal straight away. The following year he played a decisive role in helping the Canadians to win the silver medal, as he was voted the best striker of the tournament with his eleven points in seven games. After a disappointing World Cup in 2006 from a Canadian point of view, Cammalleri crowned his international career by winning the gold medal at the 2007 World Cup .
