Jason Anthony Rocco Spezza (born June 13, 1983 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of Italian descent who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . Previously, the center played twelve years for the Ottawa Senators , who had selected him in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in second position and which he led as captain in the 2013/14 season . He also spent four seasons with the Dallas Stars . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2015 World Cup .
Career
Beginnings in the junior sector
Spezza began his time as a junior in 1998 with the Brampton Battalion in the Ontario Hockey League . Even then, his talent was recognized and at the age of 16 he came to some assignments in the Canadian national team . For his second OHL season, he moved to the Mississauga IceDogs in his hometown just outside Toronto . His third season also saw a team change. Shortly after the start of the season, his journey continued to the Windsor Spitfires .

Outstanding 86 points in 41 games once again confirmed his extraordinary talent and so it was no surprise that he was drawn in second behind Ilya Kovalchuk in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators , who received this draft right as part of an exchange deal with New York Islanders had received for Alexei Yashin . His last junior season also brought a change. He left Windsor mid-season and played for the Belleville Bulls . After the end of the playoffs, he came to some missions in the finals of the AHL for the Grand Rapids Griffins .
Ottawa Senators (2002-2014)
The jump into the NHL did not succeed Spezza immediately and so he began the 2002/03 season in the Senators farm team at the Binghamton Senators . The second half of the season he then played in the NHL and was good, but not outstanding. The following season he wasn't at the top star level either. The 2004/05 season he spent again in Binghamton and was awarded the Les Cunningham Award as the most valuable player in the league . In addition, he was awarded the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the best scorer with his 117 points . His 85 prepared goals were a season high and the second-best value in the history of the American Hockey League.
After the lockout of the NHL, Spezza returned to the Senators team for the 2005/06 season . There he was immediately used in the nominal first row of attacks alongside Dany Heatley and the captain Daniel Alfredsson . This formation established itself within the season as one of the strongest offensive in the league, so that Spezza was able to achieve a total of 90 scorer points in 68 games. The following 2006/07 season was also very successful for the attacker, with 34 hits and 53 assists. The Senators reached the Stanley Cup Final after beating the Buffalo Sabers in the Eastern Conference Final. There the series around Spezza-Heatley-Alfredsson hardly unfolded and was defeated by the Anaheim Ducks in five games.
In November 2007, Spezza agreed on a seven-year contract extension that guaranteed him a total salary of 49 million US dollars. In February 2008, the Canadian succeeded in the 6-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens, his first hat trick in the NHL and the only game in his career with six points, which he was involved in all of the Senators ' goals . With a total of 92 points scorer in the 2007/08 season , he also had his best-ever season in Ottawa. In the 2008/09 season , Spezza could not build on the previous successes and scored only 73 points scorer. Due to an injury break of a total of 22 games, the following season 2009/10 was rather disappointing for the right-handed shooter. When the Senators were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs against the Pittsburgh Penguins , he was the strongest offensive player in his team, but was whistled by fans at home games due to poor defensive play and many puck losses.
For the 2011/12 season , Spezza was appointed as the permanent successor to Mike Fisher as assistant captain of the Senators . He completed an injury-free season and was after the end of the season with 84 points the fifth-best scorer within the NHL. During the NHL lockout of the 2012/13 season played Spezza for the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in the Swiss National League A . After the end of the players' strike, he returned to Ottawa, but was injured a little later in January 2013 during the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and then fell out for the remainder of the regular season. In September 2014 he took over the position of team captain of the Senators after the move from Daniel Alfredsson .
Dallas and Toronto (since 2014)
After Spezza had previously expressed the desire to move several times and a potential transfer to the Nashville Predators did not materialize due to his veto, the Senators gave him to Dallas in advance of the 2014/15 season after 12 years in Ottawa together with Ludwig Karlsson Stars and received in return Alex Chiasson , Alex Guptill , Nick Paul and a second round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . At the 2015 World Cup he won the gold medal with the national team, with 14 points being the top scorer of the tournament and the best attacker of the World Cup.
In October 2018, Spezza played his 1000th regular season game in the NHL. In the summer of 2019, his expiring contract with the Stars was not extended, so that in July 2019 he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent for one year .
