Jack Campbell (born January 9, 1992 in Port Huron , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since February 2020 .

Career

Jack Campbell began his career in Michigan's junior leagues and was named to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program at the age of 16 . There he went through different ages of the team and immediately prevailed as the goalkeeper of the U18 national team in the 2008/09 season. After all, he won the gold medal with the selection at the U18 World Championships in 2009 and 2010 and was elected to the all-star team of the tournament. When he won the title in 2010, Campbell was also named best goalkeeper and most valuable player of the U18 World Cup. In six missions he recorded three shutouts and a catch rate of 96.5%. In the same year, the 17-year-old was on the ice for the first time as a substitute goalkeeper for the U20 national team. In the final of the U20 World Cup , he came on while the score was 0: 3 and finally led the US selection with 32 shots saved to the gold medal through a victory over Canada in overtime .

In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , Campbell was selected by the Dallas Stars in the first round in eleventh position, making him the first goalkeeper to be drawn in the draft. In November 2010, he signed a three-year entry - level contract with the stars.

For the 2010/11 season Jack Campbell moved to the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League . There he could not build on his performance from the previous season and had a catch quota of only 88.3%, but penetrated in the play-offs with the Spitfires up to the conference final of the OHL. At the U20 World Cup in 2011 Campbell was again the goalkeeper of Team USA and won the bronze medal with it. He was again named the best goalkeeper of the tournament and voted into the All-Star Team.

At the 2011 World Cup , Jack Campbell was in the men's national team for the first time and was the youngest player there at the age of 19. However, he was only set up as a backup goalkeeper in the quarterfinals and was not used.

In November 2011, Campbell became the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds transferred, who gave up the rights to two defenders and six draft picks to Windsor. For the greyhounds he completed 34 games in the 2011/12 season , but missed the play-offs with the team. In March 2012, he was appointed to the roster of the Texas Stars , the farm team for the Dallas Stars in the American Hockey League , for the first time . There he shared the operating time with the Swede Cristopher Nihlstorp in the following season .

In the following seasons Campbell was used almost exclusively in the AHL, but made his NHL debut for the Dallas Stars in the 2013/14 season. With the Texas Stars he won the Calder Cup in 2014 . He also represented the United States national team at the 2015 World Cup , where he won the bronze medal with the team.

In June 2016, Campbell was given to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Nick Ebert . With the Kings, he was regularly used as a backup for Jonathan Quick in the NHL for the first time in the 2018/19 season , he played 31 games and achieved a catch rate of 92.8% and a goalscoring rate of 2.30. In February 2020, he and Kyle Clifford were handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs , while the Kings received Trevor Moore , a third-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2020 and a conditional third-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2021 . The Maple Leafs reacted by signing Campbell to an injury of Frederik Andersen and the previously unconvincing performance of his backup Michael Hutchinson .
