Michael Hutchinson (* 2. March 1990 in Barrie , Ontario ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who, since February 2020 the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team, the Colorado Eagles , in the American Hockey League for Use comes.

Career

youth

Michael Hutchinson began playing ice hockey at the age of six and spent five years in the youth division of the Barrie Colts in his hometown. He also played a year for the Markham Majors in Markham , about 100 kilometers away , before he was selected in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 69th place by the Barrie Colts. So he played from the 2006/07 season in one of Canada's three top junior leagues while staying in his hometown of Barrie. However, he did not spend his debut season completely in the OHL, but also played eight games for the Orangeville Crushers from the Ontario Junior Hockey League . In his second season with the Colts, Hutchinson established himself as a regular goalkeeper, completed 32 games and achieved a catch rate of 91.2% in the regular season. Although the team failed in the subsequent play-offs in the second round, he was able to increase his catch rate to 94.1% and was thus the second best goalkeeper in the play-offs. Nevertheless, with these achievements he attracted the attention of the scouts in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2008 , so that the Central Scouting Services rated him in 5th place of the most promising goalkeeping talents of the draft. In the mid-term rankings in January 2008 (and thus before the play-offs) he was in 18th place. In the actual draft, the Boston Bruins then selected him in 77th position. For the time being, however, the Canadian stayed with the Barrie Colts and scored five shutouts in 38 games in the 2008/09 season . He spent his last junior year in the OHL with the London Knights , to whom he moved in the summer of 2009.

Boston Bruins

After the 2009/10 season, Hutchinson signed an entry contract with the Boston Bruins, who sent him to their farm team of the American Hockey League (AHL), the Providence Bruins . After about three months in the AHL, he was even handed down one league and from then on played for the Reading Royals from the ECHL , who also functioned as the Bruins farm team. As the season progressed, the Canadian switched between AHL and ECHL more often and ended up with 28 appearances for the Providence Bruins and 18 for the Reading Royals. In the following season 2011/12 Hutchinson established himself with the Providence Bruins and came on only two missions in the ECHL. In 29 AHL games he achieved a catch rate of 92.7% and was thus (together with Jacob Markström ) the second best goalkeeper. Furthermore, he was twice as a substitute goalkeeper in the NHL squad of the Boston Bruins during the season , but was not used.

After spending the 2012/13 season as the second goalkeeper for the Providence Bruins behind Niklas Svedberg , his contract was not extended in the summer of 2013. As a free agent , he then joined the Winnipeg Jets in July 2013 . Hutchinson emphasized that his time in Boston was mainly shaped by the collaboration with goalkeeper Tuukka Rask .

Winnipeg Jets

Hutchinson also gave the Jets to their farm teams for the time being, the St. John's IceCaps from the AHL and the Ontario Reign from the ECHL. After he had spent the first half of the 2013/14 season mainly in the ECHL, he later established himself in the AHL and reached the final of the Calder Cup with the IceCaps . In the play-offs, Hutchinson was in every game from the start and achieved a catch rate of 93.8% in 21 games and a goalscoring rate of 1.95, which was the highest of all goalkeepers in the play-offs. Because of these achievements, the Jets called him towards the end of the season in the NHL squad, where Hutchinson played his first three games, had a 94.3 percent catch rate and recorded his first NHL win against his previous employer, the Boston Bruins .

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Hutchinson was firmly in the NHL squad as the second goalkeeper behind Ondřej Pavelec and Connor Hellebuyck . However, he lost this regular place to Steve Mason and Hellebuyck in preparation for the 2017/18 season . As a result, the Canadian was again mostly in the AHL for the Manitoba Moose on the ice and was elected to the AHL Second All-Star Team at the end of the season .

Florida, Toronto and Colorado

After five years in the organization of the Jets, Hutchinson signed a one-year free agent contract with the Florida Panthers in July 2018 . There he was also mainly used in the AHL with the Springfield Thunderbirds before he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in December 2018 . In return, the Panthers received a five-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . Hutchinson was active in Toronto for a little over a year before he was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Calle Rosén for the trade deadline in February 2020 .
