Niklas Svedberg (born September 4, 1989 in Sollentuna ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Timrå IK in Svenska Hockeyligan since June 2018 .
Career
In Sweden
Niklas Svedberg played in the youth department of Djurgårdens IF and was in goal for the U16 and U17 national teams of his home country. In the 2006/07 season he completed one game for Djurgården in J20 SuperElit and 13 games for Botkyrka HC in Hockeyettan , a senior league. During this season Svedberg then moved to MODO Hockey , where he was also used in the U18 and U20 junior teams. In the following 2007/08 season he made his professional debut in the Elitserien , Sweden's top division, but continued to play mainly in the J20 SuperElit. In the next season, the goalkeeper completed three games in the Elitserien, but spent most of the season on loan at Huddinge IK in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan .
The 2009/10 season was the first in which Svedberg was mainly used in the Elitserien at MODO and there in 32 games to a catch quota of 90%. As a result, the Swede moved to league rivals Brynäs IF , where he had to line up as the second goalkeeper behind Thomas Greiss and made 21 appearances. He also spent a short time on loan at Mora IK . After Greiss returned to the NHL , Svedberg took turns with Johan Holmqvist in the 2011/12 season . In the play-offs, however, Svedberg was in top form, played 13 games, achieved four shutouts and thus played a key role in Brynäs IF becoming Swedish champions .
Boston Bruins
With these achievements, Svedberg drew attention to himself in North America, with the result that the Boston Bruins from the NHL signed him in May 2012. As part of the preparation for the 2012/13 season, however, they gave it to the Providence Bruins , their farm team from the American Hockey League . The debut season in the AHL was very positive for Svedberg, he achieved a catch quota of 92.5% and was elected to the AHL First All-Star Team and the AHL All-Rookie Team . He also received the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award for best goalkeeper in the league.
Svedberg also spent almost all of the 2013/14 season in the AHL; only in January 2014 he completed a game for the Boston Bruins and thus came to his debut in the NHL. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, the Swede was firmly behind Tuukka Rask in the Bruins' NHL squad and made 18 appearances this season.
Salawat Yulayev Ufa
His contract with the Bruins ran out, however, so Svedberg decided to move back to Europe and sign a one-year contract with Salawat Julajew Ufa from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). This was extended for another two years after the 2015/16 season, in which he reached the playoff semifinals with the team. He also dabuted for the Swedish national team on the Euro Hockey Tour during the 2016/17 season .
Minnesota and return to Sweden
In July 2017, Svedberg returned to the NHL after two KHL years by signing a one-year deal with the Minnesota Wild . They only used him in their farm team, the Iowa Wild , in the AHL, before he joined Timrå IK in June 2018 and thus returned to his home in Sweden.
