Over the course of his career, Richards played 1,272 games in the NHL, during which time he won the Stanley Cup with both the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 and the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 . In addition, he was the most valuable player in the play-offs in the 2003/04 season . On the international stage, Richards won the World Cup of Hockey in the same year and represented his home country at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy .
Career
Richards was brought to position 64 in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft along with his teammate and childhood friend Vincent Lecavalier from a youth team, the Rimouski Océanic , in the National Hockey League . The draft was followed by two more years of preparation in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League before Richards moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL in 2000 .
In the 2003/04 season he managed to win the Stanley Cup for the Tampa Bay Lightning together with Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Dave Andreychuk . Richard's performance won the Conn Smythe Trophy for Best Player of the Playoffs ( MVP ). He was the top scorer in the playoffs that season and managed to break the 1996 record set by Joe Sakic for most game-winning goals. Seven of the 16 playoff victories were decided by a goal from him in 2004.
With the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy Richards was awarded in 2004 for his fair play by the NHL. In 2004 Brad Richards was part of the victorious Canadian national team at the World Cup of Hockey , and in 2006 the Canadians were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy .
The strike in the 2004/05 NHL season bridged Richards in the Russian ice hockey league at Ak Bars Kazan , where he was only able to play part of the season due to an injury. He ended the 2005/06 NHL season with 91 points as his personally most successful season. He wears the number 19 in honor of his great role model Joe Sakic .
Shortly before the end of the NHL trade deadline , on February 26, 2008, Richards and his teammate Johan Holmqvist were transferred from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Dallas Stars . In return, Tampa Bay received Jussi Jokinen , Jeff Halpern , Mike Smith and a four-round vote in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft from the Stars.
On July 2, 2011, Richards signed a nine-year contract worth approximately $ 60 million with the New York Rangers . The Rangers dissolved this prematurely after the 2013/14 season , whereupon Richards joined the Chicago Blackhawks in July 2014 . The following season, Richards completed his 1,000th game in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup again at the end of the playoffs. Subsequently, his expiring contract was not extended, so that he joined the Detroit Red Wings in July 2015 . He ended his active career after the 2015/16 season.
