Bernard Marcel "Bernie" Parent (born April 3, 1945 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who from 1965 to 1979 for the Boston Bruins , Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia Blazers in the World Hockey Association played.

Career

Bernie Parent began his career with the Niagara Falls Flyers in a junior league, where he was elected to the Second All-Star Team in 1964 and the First All-Star Team in 1965. In 1965 he joined the Boston Bruins National Hockey League team and played his first season as number 1 with the Bruins. But the following season he was only the third goalkeeper. In the summer of 1967 an expansion draft took place due to the introduction of new teams , in which Parent was signed by the newly founded Philadelphia Flyers . In his first year with the Flyers he was voted into the NHL All Star Game , which was repeated the following year. On January 31, 1971, the Flyers transferred him to the Toronto Maple Leafs .

In 1972 a competitive league for the NHL was started, the WHA . Parent was one of the first players to move from the NHL to the WHA in 1972. He signed a contract with the Philadelphia Blazers , left the team in the play-offs in May 1973 and returned to the NHL. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who still had the rights to him, transferred them to Parents former team, the Philadelphia Flyers. The fans were not positive towards him at the beginning, as he had played for the city rivals in the WHA.

The most successful period of his career began with his return to the Flyers. In the first season after his return he was able to win the Stanley Cup with Philadelphia . Parent played a big part in the success and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the best player of the play-offs . He also shared the Vezina Trophy for the fewest goals conceded with Tony Esposito of the Chicago Blackhawks . Parent managed 12 shutouts in the season . A mark that Dominik Hašek was only able to crack again in 1997/98. The following season 1974/75 was a reflection of the previous season. Again the Philadelphia Flyers won the Stanley Cup, Parent won the Vezina and the Conn Smythe Trophy. In addition, he played in the All Star Game and was elected to the NHL First Allstar Team . He was celebrated by the press and named best player of the year by several newspapers and TV stations.

In the 1975/76 season they could not repeat the successes. But on the contrary. Bernie Parent was only able to play 11 games because he was out due to an operation. On February 17, 1979 Parent played his last game. In the game against the New York Rangers , a part of an attacker's bat accidentally hit Parent's right eye. Due to the injury, he was unable to continue his career. After his career, he was still working as an assistant and goalkeeping coach for the Flyers and coached Pelle Lindbergh , among others , who had Parent as a role model and who died in a car accident in 1985 at the age of 26.

In 1984, Bernie Parent was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

In 1999 the Canadian Hockey League named him the goalkeeper of the All-Time All Star team.
