Joseph Francis Richard Sévigny (born November 4, 1957 in Montreal , Quebec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper , who played from 1979 and 1987 for the Montréal Canadiens and Québec Nordiques in the National Hockey League .

Career

During his junior years Sévigny played with Rick Vaive for the Sherbrooke Castors in the QMJHL . In the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft , the Montreal Canadiens selected him in the seventh round as the 124th player of the draft.

His first station in the senior sector was the Kalamazoo Wings in the IHL in 1977 . A year later he played for the Springfield Indians in you AHL . During the season he moved within the AHL to the Nova Scotia Voyageurs . For the playoffs, the Canadiens brought him into their squad as the third goalkeeper behind Ken Dryden and Michel Larocque . So he won his first and only Stanley Cup , even before he had played his first game in the NHL.

It was only in the following 1979/80 season that he was in goal for the first time in the NHL. Dryden had finished his career and the Larocque said Gros of the Ice Age with Denis Herron . Sévigny played eleven games in the NHL that year. In the following year, the three divided the ice age, with he had stood in goal most games at 33 after the departure of Larocque. For the only time in NHL history, there were three goalkeepers who had played at least 25 games and thus shared the Vezina Trophy . From the 1981/82 season , Sévigny shared the place in goal, especially with Rick Wamsley .

After the 1983/84 season his contract ran out in Montreal and unexpectedly he could not agree with the Canadiens on an extension. There were a number of prospects of which the Quebec Nordiques made the running. At the Nordiques he was one of three goalkeepers who shared the task. He did not succeed in asserting himself as a regular goalkeeper, and so he played again and again for the Fredericton Express in the AHL. For the 1987/88 season he ended his career in the NHL.

He later played in France for HC Chamonix and HC Briançon .
