Roy "Shrimp" Worters (born October 19, 1900 in Toronto , Ontario ; † November 7, 1957 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played from 1925 to 1937 for the Pittsburgh Pirates , Montréal Canadiens and New York Americans in the National Hockey League .
Career
During his junior years he played with Lionel Conacher at the Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers and won the Memorial Cup 1920 with the team . Due to its height of only 1.60 meters, it was nicknamed Shrimp .
In 1923 he joined the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets in the Usaha . Here he was the best goalkeeper in the league and quickly became a crowd favorite. When the NHL brought an NHL team to Pittsburgh with the Pirates for the 1925/26 season , a number of Yellow Jackets players were brought into the team.
The defense of the Pirates was the weak point of the team, but Worters kept his team in the race with good performances. In the first three years he had only missed the Pirates goal in one game and was represented by his coach Odie Cleghorn . For the 1928/29 season he could not agree on a contract with the Pirates and moved to the New York Americans .
The Americans were the weakest team in the league in the previous season, but with a goals against average of 1.15 he brought the team into the playoffs. For this outstanding performance he was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as Most Valuable Player. At the end of the following season he helped the Montreal Canadiens out in a game to replace the injured George Hainsworth . With only 74 goals conceded, he was the most successful goalkeeper in the 1930/31 season . He remained clean for 324: 40 minutes in four consecutive games. Even if the Americans had little success as a team, they were always excellently filled with Worters in goal. After the 1936/37 season he ended his career.
He died of throat cancer in 1957 . In 1969 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
