Henrik Björn Lundqvist (born March 2, 1982 in Åre ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has played for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League since 2005 and holds several franchise records in his position . His twin brother Joel is also a professional ice hockey player, who was also active in the NHL in the meantime and now plays at Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan .

With the Swedish national team , Lundqvist won gold medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2017 World Cup .

Career

Frölunda HC (1999-2005)

Already in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 Henrik Lundqvist of the NHL club New York Rangers was drawn in the seventh round as 205th, but stayed in Sweden for the time being. He played for the top Swedish club and multiple Swedish champions Frölunda HC from Gothenburg until 2005 , where he was awarded the Honkens trofé three times in a row as the best goalkeeper in the Elitserien and once with the Guldhjälmen as MVP .

New York Rangers (since 2005)

Right at the beginning of the 2005/06 season Lundqvist was used because the goalkeeper Kevin Weekes was injured. As early as October 2005, the Swede was able to complete his first game against the Florida Panthers without conceding a goal, making him the first rookie to score in the New York Rangers' goal since January 1985. All in all, Lundqvist had a successful rookie season, in goalkeeping statistics such as the counter goal and saved shots he was in the top five of the first division. In the play-offs, however, the keeper could not build on the performances of the regular season and lost the three games in the series against the New Jersey Devils . Nevertheless, Lundqvist received a nomination for the Vezina Trophy as best goalkeeper, but he could not decide for himself.

In his second season with the Blueshirts , the Swede was able to confirm his achievements from last season and consistently established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the NHL, so that the fans nicknamed Lundqvist King Henrik or The King . In the game against the Dallas Stars in December 2006, there was a clash of twin brothers in the NHL for the third time when Lundqvist played against his brother Joel . In the 7-0 victory of the Rangers against the Atlanta Thrashers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals , Lundqvist completed a game without conceding a goal in the play-offs as the first goalkeeper since Mike Richter in 1997. Following the season, the Swede received a nomination for the Vezina Trophy for the second time in a row, but again he did not receive it. During the summer break, he extended his contract for a year with a rumored annual salary of 4.25 million US dollars.

During the current 2007/08 season there was another contract extension Lundqvists, in which they agreed on a further collaboration for six years, which brings the goalkeeper a total salary of 41.25 million dollars. This contract made Lundqvist the highest paid goalkeeper in the NHL in terms of average annual salary. In February 2008, he managed the eighth shutout of the season, what Eddie Giacomin did at the Rangers in the 1970/71 season. With his 30th win of the season in March 2008, he is the second goalie behind Ron Hextall , who celebrated at least 30 wins in his first three seasons in the NHL. In October 2008 Lundqvist was able to win the Victoria Cup with the Rangers by beating Metallurg Magnitogorsk . In the 2008/09 season the Swede was nominated for the NHL All-Star Game and won the competition of the Elimination Shootout . In March 2009, a victory over the Nashville Predators made Lundqvist the first goalkeeper in NHL history to win at least 30 games in each of his first four seasons. He expanded this record to seven seasons in which he succeeded in the following three years.

In January 2012 he reached the 40th shoutout of his career in a 3-0 win against the Winnipeg Jets and won the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league following the 2011/2012 season . In the following season, Lundqvist scored the 43rd shootout victory of his career in the game against the Buffalo Sabers in March 2013, overtaking the previous record holder Martin Brodeur in this category . In December 2013, the Swede and the Rangers agreed on a new seven-year contract that finally made him the highest-paid goalkeeper in the NHL with an annual salary of $ 8.5 million.

The 2013/14 season was to be another highlight of Lundqvist's career, breaking several Rangers goalkeeping records such as most wins and most clean sheets. With his sometimes outstanding achievements, he was instrumental in the entry of the Blueshirts into the Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings . In the following season he was able to confirm his performance from the previous year, but had to take a break of almost two months from February 2015 due to a neck injury. In the play-offs, the team's performance was again significantly influenced by the strong performances of the goalkeeper, who recorded an average of 2.11 goals against and a catch rate of 92.8% in 19 games, but with that the Rangers were eliminated in the Eastern- Conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning could not prevent.

After almost 15 years in New York, Lundqvist was no longer the undisputed "number 1" of the Rangers in the 2019/20 season, so he played one game less than his previous backup Alexander Georgiev during the season .

International

It was not until the 2005/06 season that the New Yorkers took their option on him and he was quickly able to assert himself in the NHL. As a regular goalkeeper of the Rangers, he came to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , where his team, thanks to his good performance in the final against Finland , was Olympic champion for the second time since 1994.

At the 2014 Olympics , he won the silver medal with the Swedish national team. He also represented his home country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and achieved third place with the team. At the 2017 World Cup, he won the gold medal.
