Joel Lundqvist (born March 2, 1982 in Åre ) is a Swedish ice hockey center that has been playing at Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan since 2009 . Joel's twin brother Henrik plays in the NHL and has been the goalkeeper of the New York Rangers since 2005 .
Career
Joel Lundqvist began his career in 1997 with the Rögle BK juniors . The following year he moved to Frölunda HC in Gothenburg. There he went through all youth departments and showed good qualities as a scorer. In the 2000 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Dallas Stars in the third round at position 68. In the same year he won the bronze medal with the Swedish junior national team at the U18 World Cup .
In the 2000/01 season Lundqvist came to his first appearances with the professionals of Frölunda in the Elitserien . From the 2001/02 season he was part of the team's regular squad. There he developed into a solid scorer and also a player who is not afraid of the tough game. In 2002/03 he received 113 penalty minutes. In 2003 and 2005 he was able to celebrate the Swedish championship with the team.
In spring 2006 he became world champion with the Swedish national team and a little later received his first NHL contract with the Dallas Stars. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he was first sent to the Dallas farm team , the Iowa Stars in the AHL . There he was able to convince and was one of the best players on the team, so that he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time in early December 2006 and played his first game against the San Jose Sharks on December 4 . In the course of the season he returned to the AHL a few times, but he was able to convince in the checking line of the Dallas Stars, so that his contract was extended by two years.
In 2009 he returned to Sweden and signed with Frölunda HC . In 2016 he won the Swedish championship and the Champions Hockey League (CHL) with the club . In 2017 the CHL title was defended and Lundqvist was named the best player of the CHL season 2016/17.
At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was part of the men's national team and won the gold medal with it; as well as in 2017 when he led the team as captain.
