Norm Maracle (born October 2, 1974 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Starbulls Rosenheim from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga .
Career
North America
Norm Maracle began his career in 1991 with the Calgary North Stars in the Alberta Midget Hockey League . In 1992 he moved to the Western Hockey League for the Saskatoon Blades . After his second season, the goalie was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings in the fifth round at position 126, he stayed in the WHL for another year and played his best season for Saskatoon. Maracle won 41 out of 56 games and was named the best goalkeeper of the season by both the WHL and the Canadian Hockey League .
The Canadian spent the following three years in the American Hockey League with the Detroit farm team , the Adirondack Red Wings , where he became a regular goalkeeper and performed well. In the 1997/98 season Maracle was allowed to play four times in the National Hockey League , but remained a regular goalkeeper in Adirondack. That year the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup .
In the 1998/99 season , Maracle was an integral part of the NHL team as a back-up goalkeeper Chris Osgood and was used 16 times in the regular season and twice in the playoffs .
In the summer of 1999, the Atlanta Thrashers formed a new team in the NHL and since the Thrashers' squad had to be filled with players, they were allowed to choose one player from each team. The teams themselves, however, had the option to suspend a certain number of their players from the draft in order to keep them. Norm Maracle was not one of them and was eventually selected by the Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft .
In the 1999/2000 season Maracle got more ice time in the NHL, as he shared the position of goalkeeper mainly with Damian Rhodes . As Thrashers were still a new team, the season went bad as expected. In the following season, the goalkeeper was rarely used in the highest North American professional league and spent most of the season in the International Hockey League with the Orlando Solar Bears . There he led the team to the Turner Cup and was named MVP of the play-offs himself .
After the season, however, the IHL stopped their game operations, so that Norm Maracle came in the 2001/02 season only to a single and his so far last use in the NHL and this and the next season played almost exclusively with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL.
Russia and Europe
In 2003, Maracle moved to the Russian Super League , where he played a very successful season at HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk and made it to the final for the championship. In July 2004, the Canadian signed a contract with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , which was terminated a little later. Instead, Maracle played another two years in Russia for HK Awangard Omsk and reached the final again.
After the end of the 2005/06 season, Norm Maracle became a free agent and it wasn't until December 2006 that he signed a new contract with Awangard Omsk. After the 2006/07 season he was finally signed by the Iserlohn Roosters from the DEL . His contract there was prematurely extended to 2010 at the end of November 2007 due to his outstanding performance. After a mixed season in 2008/09, his contract was dissolved by the Iserlohn Roosters.
Then he played until December 2009 at HDD Olimpija Ljubljana from the Austrian ice hockey league before his contract was terminated. From January to June 2010 he was under contract with the Kölner Haien from the DEL. For the 2010/2011 season he moved to the Starbulls Rosenheim . In his first season in Bavaria, Maracle was completely convincing and was voted the best goalkeeper and even player of the year in the 2nd Bundesliga by experts; in Rosenheim he is considered the best goalie since Karl Friesen. After a successful season at Starbulls Rosenheim, Maracle extended his contract for another season. After winning the runner-up in 2011/12, he ended his career for family reasons.
