Since December 2015 he has been General Manager of Frölunda HC.
Career
Sjöström played as a youth in Sweden for both the junior teams and the professional team of Västra Frölunda .
After Sjöström was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in the first round in eleventh place by the Phoenix Coyotes , he played two years in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League for the Calgary Hitmen . At the end of the 2002/03 season he played for the first time in Phoenix ' farm team , the Springfield Falcons , in the American Hockey League . The following year he switched between the AHL and the Phoenix Coyotes, in which he came to 57 missions in which he reached 13 points scorer.
Unlike many of his compatriots, Sjöström did not play at home during the lockout , but in the AHL for the Utah Grizzlies . From the 2005/06 season he was part of the Phoenix Coyotes NHL squad. For the trade deadline in March 2008, he was transferred to the New York Rangers together with David LeNeveu and Josh Gratton . In return, Al Montoya and Marcel Hossa moved to Phoenix. In early July 2009 he received a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames as a free agent .
In the course of the 2009/10 season this transferred him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a swap deal, which included a total of seven players . Although Sjöström was regularly used in Toronto, they did not extend his contract after the 2010/11 season , so the Swede decided to return to his home country and signed a contract with Färjestad BK in July 2011 .
In August 2013, Sjöström ended his career and initially worked as a scout for Frölunda HC. In November 2014 he was promoted to assistant to the general manager and was also chief scout at Frölunda. He has been the club's general manager since December 2015.
