Álvaro "Al" Montoya (born February 13, 1985 in Glenview , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League until July 2019 and at the same time for their farm team, the Bakersfield Condors , was used in the American Hockey League . He is the first Cuban American to play in the NHL.
Career
Montoya played in his youth for the Texas Tornado in the North American Hockey League and from 2000 to 2001 for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program . Another station was the University of Michigan ice hockey team . In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , Al Montoya was selected in the first round in sixth position by the New York Rangers .
After he had signed a three-year entry contract with the New York Rangers in the summer of 2005 , Montoya made his professional debut with New York's farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League ; with this team he also spent most of the following three seasons. In total, he was used in 119 games for the Wolf Pack, of which he won 66 games. On February 26, 2008 Montoya was transferred from the Rangers together with Marcel Hossa to the Phoenix Coyotes , the Blueshirts received the players Fredrik Sjöström , David LeNeveu and Josh Gratton in return .
Montoya began the 2008-09 season with the San Antonio Rampage , Phoenix 'AHL farm team. Late in the season, the goalkeeper was also used for the Coyotes in the NHL. In his first game in the National Hockey League, he succeeded in a game on April 1, 2009 against the Colorado Avalanche a shutout . Overall, Al Montoya completed five games for the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2008/09 season. He spent the 2009/10 season entirely as a substitute goalkeeper for the Rampage in the American Hockey League.
On February 9, 2011, Montoya was given in exchange for a six- round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Islanders . After goalkeepers Rick DiPietro and Kevin Poulin were out due to injury, Montoya played 21 matches for the Islanders, with nine wins, a catch rate of 92.1 percent and a shutout. On March 29, 2011, the Islanders extended his contract for one year.
In July 2012, Montoya was signed as a free agent by the Winnipeg Jets . After spending two years in Winnipeg, he joined the Florida Panthers in July 2014 . The Panthers did not renew his contract after the 2015/16 season, so he joined the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent in July 2016 . With the Canadiens he spent almost a year and a half as a backup of Carey Price before he lost this position to Antti Niemi and was subsequently transferred to the Edmonton Oilers in January 2018 . In return, Montréal received a four-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , which becomes a vote for the fifth round if Montoya completes less than seven games for the Oilers. This was not subsequently fulfilled.
As part of the preparation for the 2018/19 season, Montoya lost his place in the NHL squad to the newly signed Mikko Koskinen , so he spent the entire season at the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL. Subsequently, his expiring contract was not extended in the summer of 2019.
International
Montoya represented his home country in both the junior and senior sectors.
He played his first international tournament at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2004 , when the US team defeated Canada in the final and won the gold medal. Montoya played a large part in the success with his achievements. He was chosen as the best goalkeeper, appointed to the All-Star team and also had the highest catch rate and the lowest goals against goals of all goalkeepers. A year later, he finished fourth with the Americans at the 2005 U20 World Youth Championship after losing both the semifinals and third place match.
For the seniors, the goalkeeper played the world championships in 2009 and 2011 . After coming behind Robert Esche in a 6-2 win against France in 2009 and finishing fourth with the USA, he finished eighth in 2011. This time he was used four times and completed as many games as Ty Conklin , with whom he shared the post in goal.
