Tribeca is a borough of Manhattan , New York . The name stands for " Tri angle Be low Ca nal Street" ( dt. : Triangle below Canal Street ). It is located between Canal Street to the north, Broadway to the east, Vesey Street to the south and West Street to the west.

Tribeca was originally an industrial district, but has seen a social upgrade since the 1990s. The 388 Greenwich Street was built in 1988. Today, located in Tribeca many bars, restaurants and art galleries. It is also home to the Tribeca Film Festival , which was founded in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks .

Robert De Niro , actor and native New Yorker, owns the Tribeca Grill and the Greenwich Hotel here. The film production company Tribeca Productions is also based in the district and was founded in 1989 by De Niro and the film producer Jane Rosenthal . Even Mariah Carey is considered the end of the 1990s to Tribeca. She lives in a multi-story apartment in the Franklin Tower. Other well-known residents include Beyoncé and Jay-Z , who also mentions this in his song Empire State of Mind , as well as Taylor Swift and filmmaker Casey Neistat . In 2010 Daniel Craig bought an apartment in Tribeca.

The residential tower with the name 56 Leonard Tribeca , built by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron , was supposed to be completed by 2010 after a lengthy construction interruption, which could not be achieved due to financial difficulties. The project was completed in 2016. One of the oldest hotels in town is in Tribeca, the Cosmopolitan Hotel .
