Casey Neistat at South by Southwest 2017

Casey Owen Neistat (born March 25, 1981 in New London , Connecticut ) is an American film director , producer and YouTube personality. He also starred in the television series The Neistat Brothers , produced by him and his brother Van Neistat in 2008 and premiered on HBO in 2010 .

Life

Neistat spent his childhood and youth together with three siblings in his birthplace New London . He describes the upbringing of his parents as bad. He had problems at school early on. When he was 15 years old, his parents announced the separation. Neistat blamed his mother, which led to a lot of problems between the two. He left home and moved in with several friends, one of whom became his girlfriend. For a while they lived with Neistat's brother in Virginia . His girlfriend became pregnant and returned to Connecticut . He left school and the young couple sought refuge with friends. At the age of 17 Neistat became the father of a boy and the family then moved to a trailer park . In the meantime, the couple lived on welfare. Neistat had many small jobs to support himself and his family; u. a. he worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant. During a trip to New York City to visit his brother, he discovered his passion for making short films. He used his savings to buy an old iMac to use for editing videos. So he started making short videos about his son and found a way to express himself. The couple split three years later and Neistat moved to New York City to pursue his dream of producing films.

At the end of 2013, Neistat married his long-time partner in South Africa , the jewelry designer Candice Pool. On December 6, 2014, she gave birth to a daughter. Neistat recorded this in the video "Her Water Broke" and published it on December 23, 2014 on YouTube. In 2018 the couple had a second daughter. In July 2019, he moved to Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters .

Career

Video productions

When Neistat moved to New York City, he worked for the artist Tom Sachs for little money and struggled to make a living. However, he did not give up his passion for filming and, as a self-taught person, made small films with his brother Van “for anyone who would pay them to do so”. Neistat's first popular video was "iPod's Dirty Secret," which he shot in 2003. The resulting attention carried over to his other works. They were invited to the São Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil for the video series “Science Experiments”, which he filmed with his brother in his apartment . At that time he had a little more money to spend and started touring the world with his son. Together with his brother Van, he produced a television series about their lives. This consisted of eight films of 25 minutes each, which the TV broadcaster Home Box Office acquired in July 2008 for just under two million US dollars. Shortly afterwards, Neistat and his brother stopped working together. Since then, Neistat has produced a number of promotional videos, including for Nike and Mercedes-Benz .

His YouTube video “Bike Lanes”, published in 2011, in which he criticized the New York police for a parking ticket just because he had not used the bike path for part of the route, received many millions of views . The consistent continuation is typical of his videos: Casey Neistat rides his bike on cycle paths in accordance with the rules and does not avoid any of the many obstacles, including a patrol car. Mobility and mobile filming are among his trademarks. Early on, Neistat adopted electrically powered skateboards and flew photo drones over Manhattan. The latter brought him a complaint from the American FAA . The Association of American Press Photographers also condemned the abuse of his role model function when, for example, he flies on trips via Amsterdam or Cologne without respecting local laws. Neistat defines himself as a journalist and publishes interviews every now and then.

Casey Neistat is a role model for many subscribers to his video channel: He has a positive, real-looking charisma, travels a lot, is very tech-savvy and has shaped his own film aesthetic with his high-quality video recordings of himself and time-lapse and drone recordings. Example: When he goes down an escalator, he positions the camera in front of him beforehand and then lets it film him as if a cameraman were with him. When he drives through Manhattan on the “Boosted Board” , he often shows the setting at the height of the wheels, i.e. very close to the asphalt.

Neistat uses his studio on Broadway in New York for interior shots . He has also published films on the Vimeo video portal .

Since mid-2015 he has been concentrating on his YouTube channel, which quickly gained popularity and has 12 million subscribers (as of July 2, 2020). There he also publishes a video diary ( vlog ), which appeared daily until 2019 with a few exceptions. Since he moved to Los Angeles, there is no longer a regular vlog and new videos only appear a few days or weeks apart

Beme

In July 2015, Neistat and Matt Hackett , a former tumblr developer, released the first version of Beme, a social media platform for sharing short videos. A unique selling point of the app was that videos could only be recorded while the smartphone was held against the upper body so that the view of the display was blocked. The users should be able to perceive the recorded moments better because the eyes do not have to be focused on the smartphone display. Version 1.0.0 appeared in May 2016 in the Apple AppStore and for the first time also in the Google Play Store . On November 28, 2016, CNN announced the purchase of Beme. The video app, which previously formed the core of the operational business, was discontinued on January 31, 2017. In the future, Beme will continue to be an independent media company under the leadership of CNN, primarily to provide content for a younger and more modern target group. On January 25, 2018, Neistat and Hackett announced that they were leaving their previous positions at the company, but other employees will continue to work for Beme.
