Electric skateboards (also called e-boarders ) are skateboards with an electric drive . They are controlled by shifting weight and accelerated and braked by a radio remote control or mobile app . High-performance models accelerate from 0 to 40 kilometers per hour in four seconds, depending on body weight, and reach top speeds of up to 48 km / h. There are electric skateboards with street and all-terrain tires. With all-terrain tires z. B. gravel roads in parks and forest paths are driven. It is not legally clarified whether this is allowed. Only private properties currently give e-boarders the opportunity to practice their sport legally.

The best-known manufacturers include BoostedBoards, Evolve Skateboards, JayKay e-Boards, Inboard, Mellowboards, Mo-Bo, Skatey, Onewheel, Yuneec, Funky Drive and Faraday Motion (DIY boards). The motors are either mounted directly in the roller (in-wheel motor) or externally with a toothed belt. Legal situation in Germany

Despite a resolution by the Bundestag at the end of 2016, which calls on the federal government to regulate the behavioral and licensing requirements for the operation of self-balanced vehicles and vehicles with electric drives that do not have at least one seat in public transport with the participation of the federal states, as soon as possible no telling when the legal situation will be resolved.

Electric skateboards are not subject to the Small Electric Vehicle Ordinance , which has been in force since summer 2019 , as they do not have a handrail required there. This means that they still do not receive any approval for road traffic.

Legal situation in Austria

Electric skateboards with an output of less than 600 watts and a maximum speed of 25 km / h are classified by the Austrian road traffic regulations as "vehicle-like toys" and are not permitted for use on public roads. This does not apply to traffic-calmed residential streets and sidewalks, provided that traffic on the lane or pedestrians is not obstructed.

Vehicles with a higher performance require approval, which is denied in practice.

Legal situation in Switzerland

Electric skateboards are not permitted for use on public roads in Switzerland. Use is only permitted on private, pacified land.
