56 Leonard Street is the name and address of a skyscraper in Manhattan . The Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron designed the building.

The building, which reaches a height of 250 meters, has 58 floors and houses 146 apartments. There are ten penthouse apartments on the top nine floors, eight with one floor and two on another. When completed in late 2016, 56 Leonard Street is one of the tallest apartment buildings in the United States. Construction of the building began in early 2008, but was temporarily suspended in January 2009 due to financial problems. Originally, the building was supposed to be completed in 2010, but this could not be achieved due to the rest of the work. Construction work resumed at the end of October 2012. In early January 2013, the project received a $ 350 million loan to continue construction. The building reached its final height at the end of July 2015.

The building has an eye-catching exterior design, for example recesses and different ceiling heights on the lower floors, the upper nine floors are offset from one another, whereby the floors stabilize each other. In order not to obstruct the view with wall panels and cross members, Vierendeel beams were used, which also allowed large cantilevers. This required a calculated month-long extension of the construction time after the completion of the lower floors, as construction could only continue when the concrete in the lower floors had hardened, which also required weather protection for the floors under construction for these times. From certain perspectives, the building looks like building blocks or boxes stacked on top of one another. Its appearance has also been compared to a tower of the game Jenga . The facade is completely clad with glass.

The apartments are almost all different from one another, ranging from 96 to 645 square feet, and almost all of them sold after completion for a mean of $ 35,000 per square meter (so prices ranged from $ 3.5 million to $ 50 million). On one floor, in a communal area, there is a swimming pool with a sauna and fitness studios, a childcare area and a lounge with a library. In accordance with the individual architecture, the windows are not cleaned from the outside. Some of the windows can be tilted for ventilation and can be cleaned from the inside or allow the non-tiltable neighboring windows to be cleaned from the inside. There were also many balconies built in.

The idea was to design the apartments with as much individuality as possible. The architects used the Case Study House # 22 in Los Angeles by Pierre Koenig from 1959 and the classic bay window architecture as a model.

A system of water tanks that has been tried and tested from earthquake construction is used to compensate for wind forces, between which water is pumped back and forth to compensate for vibrations.
