Denis Emile DeJordy (born November 12, 1938 in Saint-Hyacinthe , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and coach who played for the Chicago Black Hawks , Los Angeles Kings , Montréal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings in National Hockey from 1962 and 1974 League played. He was the first goalkeeping coach in the NHL.
Career
During his junior years DeJordy played with Stan Mikita for the St. Catharines Teepees in the OHA . He moved within the league to the Peterborough Petes , with whom he reached the final tournament of the Memorial Cup in 1959 , but lost there.
His first stop in the senior sector was Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds in the Eastern Professional Hockey League . During his second season he was brought to the Buffalo Bisons in the AHL . In the 1962/63 season he made his debut in the NHL with the Chicago Black Hawks . In the 1964/65 season he succeeded in asserting himself against the longtime number 1 in the goal of the Hawks, Glenn Hall . For a few years he was the first goalkeeper in Chicago until he was ousted by Tony Esposito in the 1969/70 season .
In February 1970 he was handed over to the Los Angeles Kings along with two other players , who gave Bill White to the Black Hawks for this purpose . Here he was again the undisputed goalkeeper. Shortly after the start of the 1971/72 season , the Kings took the opportunity to commit an absolute top goalkeeper from the Montréal Canadiens with Rogatien Vachon and DeJordy had to move to Montréal in return. With the Canadiens at that time Ken Dryden was in goal and it was clear to him that the fight and the regular place was hopeless. After the end of the season he was transferred to the New York Islanders . In the package that the Islanders from Montreal bought was Glenn Resch . Since the Islanders relied on Resch as a back-up for Billy Smith , DeJordy was given to the Detroit Red Wings in October . There he came back to several missions. The next year he played mostly for the Baltimore Clippers in the AHL. He was only used in one game at the Red Wings. After conceding four goals in the first third, he was replaced.
After this season he ended his active career. The Red Wings then used him as a goalkeeping coach. He was the first coach in NHL history to specifically take care of goalkeeper training.
