Donald Laurie "Don" Edwards (born September 28, 1955 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and coach who played for the Buffalo Sabers , Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1976 to 1986 .
Career
He was one of the busy junior goalkeepers during his junior years with the Kitchener Rangers at the OHA . With 55 games, he was surprisingly often on the ice. But despite strong performances, it was not believed that he would be able to become a strong NHL goalkeeper. In the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft , it was not until the fifth round before the Buffalo Sabers selected him in 89th place. In the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft , the San Diego Mariners only secured the rights to him late in the tenth round as 135.
He began his senior career in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears . In the 1976/77 season he made the leap into the NHL with the Sabers and got the place as a regular goalkeeper from Gerry Desjardins . In his rookie season 1977/78 he was in 72 games between the posts. With 38 victories, he set a best performance that no rookie goalkeeper has ever achieved with the Sabers.
He was particularly in top form when it came to the top teams in the league. The goals he conceded in the games against the teams from Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia and the New York Islanders was better than against the rest of the league. In order to relieve him, they put Bob Sauvé at his side. Together they won the Vezina Trophy in 1980 .
For the 1982/83 season , the Sabers gave him to the Calgary Flames . In his three years with the Flames, however, he could not build on the performance in Buffalo. In the 1985/86 season he fulfilled a childhood dream with his move to the Toronto Maple Leafs . But after half a season, the Leafs paid him off his contract. He played a few more games in the lower grades before retiring from his career.
In the late 1990s he was assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings and in 2003 he was goalkeeping coach with the Carolina Hurricanes . He is currently General Manager of Saginaw Spirit in the OHL.
