geography
Cisterna di Latina is 49 km southeast of Rome and 17 km northwest of Latina in the foothills of the Alban Mountains on the edge of the Pontine plain . Its districts are Borgo Flora, Le Castella, Doganella di Ninfa, Isola Bella and Olmobello.
The neighboring towns are Aprilia , Artena ( RM ), Cori , Latina , Norma , Sermoneta and Velletri (RM).
traffic
Cisterna is located on State Road 7 Via Appia , the main access road to the Pontine Plain.
It also has a train station on the Roma-Formia-Napoli railway line , which is located in the center of the village. The station is also served by the FR7 Rome-Formia regional train.
history
In ancient times, a little southeast of today's city on the Via Appia was the Tres Tabernae road station , which developed into a city and became the bishopric. In 868 Tres Tabernae was destroyed by the Saracens and then abandoned. The bishopric was moved to Velletri . The fact that Tres Tabernae was not rebuilt was certainly also due to the increasing swamping of the Pontine plain since late antiquity.
Residents of Tres Tabernae founded a new settlement on a hill called Terra di Cisterna , named after a cistern from the time of Emperor Nero . Since the Via Appia was rarely used, the place remained insignificant.
On September 18, 1159, the cardinal priest and chancellor Rolando Bandinelli (?) Was here by his supporters as Pope Alexander III. approved; on September 20, it was consecrated in Ninfa by Cardinal Bishop Hubald von Ostia .
The drainage of the Pontine Marshes from 1929 onwards was coordinated from Cisterna. This started the upswing of the town, which had belonged to the province of Littoria as Cisterna di Littoria since 1934 .
After the Allies landed near Anzio on January 22, 1944 , the battle for Cisterna began on January 29, and the German Wehrmacht was able to repel the advance of the Americans. Cisterna could be held by the Germans until April, but was then almost completely destroyed.
Reconstruction began in the 1950s with the creation of new residential areas. The settlement of international companies such as Goodyear and Unilever led to a rapid upswing.
