history

The ancient Privernum was one of the main places of the Volscians . It was founded by the Romans in 329 BC. Subjugated by Lucius Aemilius Mamercinus Privernas and declared a Civitas Sine Suffragio . The city's heyday began with the connection to the Via Appia . Even after the end of the Western Roman Empire and the decline of the Via Appia, Privernum remained an important trading center. It was probably only destroyed by the Saracens in the 9th century . The population then settled on the easier to defend Colle Rosso , the square of today's old town. The settlement was named Piperno . From the Middle Ages the city belonged to the Papal States . However, it never came under the rule of one of the Roman noble families, but retained its autonomy as a city.

From the eighth century until 1217, the city was the seat of a bishopric when the diocese was united with that of Terracina . Today it is called the Diocese of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno .

In 1927 Piperno was renamed Priverno again.
