Bassiano is a municipality in the province of Latina in the Italian region of Lazio with 1477 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
Bassiano is 73 km southeast of Rome and 22 km northeast of Latina .
It is located on the southern slope of the Monti Lepini above the Pontine plain . It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Lepini e Ausoni .
The municipality extends over a height of 14 to 1,205 m slm
The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).
The neighboring parishes , clockwise, are Sermoneta , Norma , Carpineto Romano ( RM ) and Sezze .

Bassiano is accessed from the SP 17 Via Ninfinia (Cisterna di Latina - Sezze). The nearest train station is in Sezze on the Roma – Formia – Napoli line , 13 km away.
history
Legend has it that Bassiano was founded by Emperor Caracalla , who was originally called Lucius Septimius Bassianus . However, it is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1169 in which a certain Gregorio Leonis confirms the ownership of the place to a lord of Bassiano.
In 1240 Pope Gregory IX. the castles of Sermoneta and Bassiano to Trasmondo Annibaldi as thanks for the support against Frederick II. The Annibaldi ruled until 1297 when they were replaced by the Caetani .
