geography

Sabaudia is located 90 kilometers southeast of Rome and 24 kilometers from the provincial capital Latina on the Tyrrhenian Sea . The core city is surrounded by the coastal lake Lago di Sabaudia a few meters behind the coast.

The region is left in its natural state, not least because of the Circeo National Park , which was established in 1934 and to which most of the municipal area belongs. Special features of the area are sandy dunes on the coast and four nearby lakes, the Lago di Sabaudia (also Lago di Paola ), the Lago dei Monaci , the Lago di Caprolace and the Lago di Fogliano .

The neighboring municipalities are Latina , Pontinia , San Felice Circeo and Terracina .

history

The city was founded in 1933 during the fascist regime of Mussolini and inaugurated on April 15, 1934. Your architecture is a typical example of Italian rationalism .

Sabaudia is one of the fascist ideal cities founded with considerable propaganda effort in the then reclaimed Pontine swamps south of Rome. As the only one of these cities, Sabaudia can still be experienced almost unchanged in its original design intent, which alternates between massive classic and modern.

A quartet of young architects (Gino Cancelotti, Eugenio Montuori, Luigi Piccinato, Alfredo Scalpelli) not only designed the urban plan between 1932 and 1934, but also most of the public buildings such as the town hall, church, Casa del Fascio, hotel, but also the water tower and bus station implemented. Angiolo Mazzoni's post office is one of the most unusual buildings of Italian interwar modernism.

In Sabaudia there is still a climate of gratitude towards the faded "Duce". On the public monuments there are no references to the crimes of the fascist dictatorship in Italy and the street names largely refer to members of the former royal dynasty up to the first Counts of Savoy .

economy

Sabaudia is a center of tourism that is visited by many politicians and cultural workers. In addition, agriculture is practiced, mainly vegetables and flowers.

politics

Mayor and City Council

Maurizio Lucci ( Fratelli d'Italia ) was elected mayor in June 2009 and re-elected in 2013 after his transfer from the PdL to the nationalist Fratelli d'Italia with 56.09% against his rival Giovanni Secci (PdL), 43.91%. His right-wing alliance also has the majority in the municipal council with 10 out of 16 seats. Only right-wing or right-wing radical councils are represented in the municipal council. His predecessor Alessandro Maracchioni ( Forza Italia ) prevailed in the mayoral election in June 2007 against his predecessor Salvatore Schintu ( Alleanza Nazionale ) in the runoff election. Maracchioni died unexpectedly in July 2008. Giada Gervasi (Lista Civica: I Giovani Cittadini) was elected mayor on June 11, 2017 and was confirmed on June 27.

Attractions

The architecture of Sabaudia, entirely determined by Italian razionalismo, has its main buildings in the town hall and the parish church of Ss. Annunziata, both of which stand out for their tall towers. Next to the church is the round baptistery, and the nearby post office should also be mentioned.
