Kanal ob Soči ( Italian : Canale d'Isonzo , German : Kanalburg ) is a municipality in Slovenia . It is located in the Primorska region on the Soča River (Isonzo in Italian) between Tolmin and Nova Gorica at an altitude of 103 meters above sea level. The community has 5978 inhabitants.

The influence of the milder Mediterranean climate can be seen here with cypress and fig trees. A smaller plastics factory is located in the village. The newer part of town spreads out on a higher terrace. The picturesque settlement extends from the Soča banks at the foot of the Kanalski Kolovrat hilly landscape up to the Banjšice plateau.

Soča / Isonzo

At the Canal, the Soča washes away the last of the trough gorges, which are quite wide because of the strong erosion; they are 400 m long, the narrowest are to be found with 20 m at the beginning of the village above the bridge, the widest with 60 m at the exit from the village: they are on average 10 m deep. however, the flow is often very low because of the Plave hydroelectric power station. In the summer there are competitions in jumping from the bridge.

history

The area at the deep hollows of the Soča was already settled in prehistory. The Romans built a bridge at this strategically important point. Later, a fortress is mentioned in 1264, the “Court of St. Mary” in 1336, and the bridge around 1350 as the only crossing over the Soča. The village was affected by the Venetian-Austrian war 1615-1617, it was involved in the great Tolmin peasant uprising in 1713. It was badly damaged during the First World War .

Attractions

The core of the settlement was surrounded by a curtain wall in the Middle Ages. Four towers of the former curtain wall have been preserved: one is now the exhibition room of the local painter Riko Debenjak. The old part of the city extends on a narrow terrace on the left bank of the Soča and has narrow, closed streets around the main square “Na Placu” (= Am Platz) and along the “Gasa” (= alley). On the square behind the church is a Neptune fountain from 1815: it is the most important market fountain in Slovenia. In the park on the opposite side there is a bust of the local alpinist and culturally active Valentin Stanič (N. Pirnat): on the upper side of the square there is a bust of the composer Marij Kogoj (B. Kalin).

The parish church of the Assumption (cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja) with a preserved Gothic presbytery (1430) was probably built in the 13th century. Baroque style after the fire in 1632, a northern and a southern chapel added. Around 1790 it received the baroque facade and the peculiar tower. The main altar is a valuable Venetian stone carving from 1740.
