Cerkno ( Italian : Circhina ; German : Kirchheim ) is a small town and municipality in the Goriška region in Slovenia .

Location and inhabitants

4,988 people live in the total community, which consists of 30 villages and hamlets. The main town of Cerkno alone has 1680 inhabitants. The municipality is located west of the capital Ljubljana .

The flute from the Divje babe I cave 

A 55,000-year-old Neanderthal flute was discovered at the archaeological site of Divje babe . The musical instrument found in a karst cave is the oldest of its kind in Europe.

The Franja partisan hospital is located northeast of Cerkno . This served the partisans as a hospital during World War II and was never discovered by the Germans.
