historical overview

The hospital was opened in December 1943 under the direction of the doctor Dr. Viktor Volčjak in the remote Pasica Gorge. Since the gorge is inaccessible, bridges first had to be built. In order to keep the situation a secret, patients were blindfolded during the transport. The camp was also secured by minefields and machine gun emplacements.

The first wounded were admitted on December 23, 1943. In January or February 1944, the doctor Dr. Franja Bojc-Bidovec ran the hospital named after her first name. Except for a three-month break, she worked in the hospital until the end of the war. She was supported by a nurse and trained former wounded. In just under 18 months, a total of 578 people, 80 of them from other nations, were treated. Among them was also a German Wehrmacht soldier who, after his recovery, worked as an auxiliary nurse in the partisan hospital until the end of the war.

Over the course of time, the facility was gradually expanded to include eleven larger barracks, which were covered with moss and twigs for camouflage and given a flecktarn paint on the outside. The hospital was well equipped for the conditions at the time. The operating room and the X-ray machine were located in a larger barrack with windows . In addition, a wooden hut for the disabled , an isolation ward, a barrack with sanitary facilities, several medical wards and a laundry were built on the site. The water was supplied via an elevated tank and electricity was obtained from its own hydropower plant . The hospital could accommodate a total of 108 patients.
