Divje babe (German: wild women ) is the name of two caves in the Idrijca valley near Cerkno , Goriška region , Slovenia .

The larger of the two caves, the archaeological significance Divje babe I . Along with Betalov spodmol and Potočka zijalka, it is one of the most important Stone Age sites in Slovenia. Divje babe II is just a few minutes' walk uphill; after two probes, no further excavations have been carried out in it.

Geographical location

The horizontal cavities are in a wooded steep slope on the south edge of the Idrijca valley in a dolomite - rock massif , about 230 m above the valley floor and 450  m. i. J. The caves can be reached via a partially paved footpath. Divje babe I can be ridden in the company of a local cave guide, Divje babe II is freely accessible.

Finds

The most famous find is a bone flute discovered in 1995, the age of which is estimated to be 45,000 to 60,000 years and which is therefore considered to be the oldest musical instrument in the world. The flute is carved from the thigh bone of a young cave bear and has four perforated finger holes. The flute can be viewed in the Slovenian National Museum in Ljubljana .
