France Bevk
France Bevk (born September 17, 1890 in Zakojca near Cerkno , † September 17, 1970 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian writer.
Life
Bevk came from a small village in the Julian Alps in the area of Tolmin (Tolmein) and was the son of a craftsman. Bevk first worked as a teacher, then as a journalist and publicist. He experienced both the First and the Second World War as a soldier on the Soča in the border area with Italy . In the interwar period he lived in the Italian-occupied area of the former county of Gorizia and Gradisca . In Gorizia he published the satirical magazine Čuk na pal`ci from 1922 to 1926 . Bevk wrote most of his most important works under the fascist rule of Mussolini in Italy. The fate of his people under foreign occupation was very important to him. He worked as a publicist and spokesman for the Slovenian national minority in Italy and was arrested several times. After 1943 Bevk was a partisan in the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army . After the war, he was chairman of the Slovenian parliament for a few years and, in 1947, vice-president of the Republic of Slovenia. He lived as a freelance writer in Ljubljana.
Bevk wrote about 100 works. He was a very prolific and versatile writer who wrote in all literary genres. Most important are the prose works in which he realistically portrayed the life of the rural poor. But he also wrote historical stories. The main work is the novel Kaplan Martin Čedermac , which deals with the conflict of conscience of a Slovenian pastor in the Italian state, who fights between his duty of obedience to the state and the demands of his people for mother tongue worship and instruction. A natural right of the minority against the unjustified claim to power of the authorities is generally addressed in many of Bevk's works, without lapsing into ostensible nationalistic black and white painting .
Despite his good narrative qualities, Bevk has so far remained almost unnoticed in German-speaking countries. Apart from a few books for young people, there are almost no translations.
