The Avče pumped storage power plant ( Slovenian Črpalna Hidroelectrarna Avče , short ČHE Avče ) is located near the Slovenian village Avče, which belongs to the municipality of Kanal ob Soči . The operator is SENG Soške elektrarne Nova Gorica doo .

history

The project was approved on August 1, 2004 and the groundbreaking for the Avče pumped storage power plant took place on September 22, 2004. The construction contracts were awarded in December 2004 and construction work began in January 2005. The power plant should actually be completed in December 2008, the commissioning did not take place until April 2010, however. SENG invested a total of 122 million euros in the construction of the pumped storage power plant.

Upper basin

The upper basin is located north of Kanalski Vrh on the Banjšice plateau. Since this plateau is not completely closed, two dams were built from calcareous sandstone and calcareous rubble. To make it watertight, the surface of the upper basin was coated with asphalt concrete .

The upper basin has a usable volume of 2.17 million cubic meters with a maximum water level of 625  m. i. J.

Lower basin

As a lower basin at 104  m. i. J. , the existing Ajba reservoir of the Plave hydropower plant in the Soča river is also used.

Water supply and pressure tunnel

A 2216 m long pressure tunnel with a diameter of 2.6 m to 3.3 m and a maximum effective fall height of 521 m leads from the upper basin to the power house . The 45 m high moated castle consists of two chambers.

Power house

The power house is located on the left bank of the Soča River. In the power house is located in a circular shaft having 18 m diameter and 80 m depth of a single vertically standing reversible Francis - pump turbine with 185  megawatts (MW) in the turbine mode and 180 MW in the pumping operation. The water flow through the pump turbine is 34 m³ / s in pumping mode and 40 m³ / s in turbine mode. The nominal speed of the turbine is 600 min −1 , but can (depending on the source) be varied by −2% and +4% or −4% to +6%. An asynchronous motor generator with a rated output of 195 MVA ( megavolt ampere ) is used to convert electrical into mechanical energy and vice versa .

Annual electrical energy of 553 gigawatt hours (GWh) is used for the pump operation, from which 426 GWh can be output in turbine operation. This corresponds to an annual utilization rate of 77%.

Mains connection

The connection to the high-voltage network on the 110-kilovolt level is made via a 200-MVA machine transformer .
