Grant Fuhr (born September 28, 1962 , Spruce Grove , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Edmonton Oilers , Toronto Maple Leafs , Buffalo Sabers , Los Angeles Kings , St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames in the 1981-2000 National Hockey League played. The five-time Stanley Cup winner was the first Afro-Canadian to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 . From 2004 to 2009 he was the goalkeeping coach of the Phoenix Coyotes .

Career

Grant Fuhr's professional career began in 1979 with the Victoria Cougars in the WHL . After two years there, in which he was once the best goalkeeper in the league , he was drawn in the first round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft as eighth place overall by the Edmonton Oilers . At the start of the 1981 season he made his debut in the best league in the world. He stayed with Edmonton for nine years, temporarily helping out in the AHL at the Moncton Alpines (10 games) and the Cape Breton Oilers (6 games). At the Rendez-vous '87 he was in the goal of the NHL team. In 1990 he was banned for one year for using cocaine . After one and a half years with the Toronto Maple Leafs (1991-1993) he moved during the 1992/93 season to the Buffalo Sabers , where he also briefly played in the AHL farm team, the Rochester Americans . The Sabers had sent Dave Andreychuk and Daren Puppa to Toronto for him, among others . The next club change took place shortly before the end of the 1994/95 season , which he ended with the Los Angeles Kings . After 14 games Grant Fuhr moved to the St. Louis Blues . Here he played for four years. He completed his last season in 1999/2000 with the Calgary Flames . In the 19 years that he played in the NHL, he completed 867 games.

For the Canadian national ice hockey team Fuhr ran among other things at the Canada Cups in 1984 and 1987 . In both tournaments he won the gold medal with the team.

From 2000 to 2002 he worked in an advisory position for goalkeeping questions at the Calgary Flames and in summer 2004 he took over the job as goalkeeping coach of the Phoenix Coyotes .
