Daren James Puppa (born March 23, 1965 in Kirkland Lake , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Buffalo Sabers , Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League from 1985 to 2000 .

Career

As a junior he studied at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and played for its team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the 1983 NHL Entry Draft , the Buffalo Sabers selected him in the fourth round as 75th. This was surprising, because hardly any scout had it on their notes. Buffalo's general manager Scotty Bowman received the tip from Ralph Backstrom , who is a cousin of Puppa's father.

He made his debut in the NHL in the 1985/86 season . After a few games in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans , Puppa was brought into the NHL and wanted to spare goalkeeper Tom Barrasso . The reigning Stanley Cup winner, the Edmonton Oilers , hadn't calculated much. The young goalkeeper surprised and kept his goal clean, and the Sabers won 2-0. Still, he didn't make a breakthrough with the Sabers, and he was only the third goalkeeper. It was only when Barrasso moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins that he managed to fight for the place of the goalkeeper. Finally in this position he convinced in the 1989/90 season . He was elected to the Second All-Star Team , took part in the All-Star Game and came in second behind Patrick Roy in the Vezina Trophy election . In the years to come he was unable to keep the high level constant. During the 1992/93 season he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs together with Dave Andreychuk and a draft law with which the Sabers Kenny Jönsson got . In return, Grant Fuhr came to Buffalo.

The Maple Leafs did not protect him in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft , and so he came to the Tampa Bay Lightning via the Florida Panthers . He was a great support in the new team. Especially in the 1995/96 season he showed strong performances and was again among the nominees for the Vezina Trophy. But back problems plagued him since the training camp in the summer of 1996. He could not play any of the following seasons continuously, and so he decided to end his career after five games in the 1999/2000 season .
