Gregory Linn Polis (born August 8, 1950 in Westlock , Alberta - † March 18, 2018 in Victoria , British Columbia ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 622 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , St. Louis Blues , New York Rangers and Washington Capitals played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . In the course of his career, Polis took part in the NHL All-Star Game three times and was named Most Valuable Player of the Game in 1973 .

Career

Polis spent his junior years between 1966 and 1970 with the Estevan Bruins , with whom he was active in the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League and Western Canada Hockey League . The winger played a total of 276 games for the team over a period of four years, in which he scored 366 points . This brought him to the WCHL First All-Star Team in 1969 and 1970 when he was placed second in the scorer ranking. However, he celebrated his greatest success at the end of the 1967/68 season with the Bruins, when the team won the President's Cup for the first time and then took part in the Memorial Cup . In particular, due to his performance over the past two seasons, Polis was selected in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft in seventh overall position by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League .

At the beginning of the 1970/71 season , the Canadian strengthened the penguins and was a permanent member of the team for the following three and a half years. In each of his first three years of play in the league, Polis was also nominated for the NHL All-Star Game , when he was named Most Valuable Player thanks to his two hits in 1973 . During the 1973/74 season , the attacker was given to the St. Louis Blues together with Bryan Watson and a second-round suffrage in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft . In return, Steve Durbano , Ab DeMarco junior and J. Bob Kelly received this award . Polis' time in St. Louis, however, only lasted half a season or 37 games, as the Blues parted ways again after seven months in August 1974.

In exchange for Larry Sacharuk and a first-round suffrage in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft , the offensive player landed with the New York Rangers . In the Rangers jersey, Polis managed to quickly gain a foothold despite initial problems. He played three more playing years in the NHL, in which he always approached the 40-point mark. Only in the course of the 1977/78 season began injuries to the 27-year-old. The Rangers remained patient until January 1979, although the striker played only 53 games over a period of two years - ten of them for the farm team New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League . Polis joined the Washington Capitals via the waiver list . There he completed his last NHL games in the course of the 1979/80 season , before he declared his active career ended at the age of 30 in the 1980/81 season in the service of cooperation partner Hershey Bears from the AHL.

Polis died in March 2018 at the age of 67 years from the effects of cancer in Victoria in the province of British Columbia . His funeral took place in Dapp near his birthplace Westlock in the province of Alberta .
