Career
Player career
The Canadian began his career in 1974 with the Kitchener Greenshirts and then went on the ice from 1974 to 1978 for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . During this time he was selected in the second round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft at a total of 26th position by the New York Rangers . At the beginning of the 1978/79 season , Maloney was in the squad of the New Haven Nighthawks , the then farm team of the Rangers, in the American Hockey League . In the course of the same season he was appointed after constant performance in the NHL squad of Rangers and then continuously used as a regular in the National Hockey League. Maloney qualified with the Rangers for the play-offs and defeated the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers in the first two rounds . In the third round, the city rivals, the New York Islanders , were defeated in six games and then the entry into the finals of the Stanley Cup was realized. In five games, however, the final series was lost to the Canadiens de Montréal . In the following years, the center managed to increase its point yield and in the following season with 73 points in the regular season to reach its career record in the NHL.
By the end of the 1983/84 season he got at least 20 goals this season for the Rangers five years in a row. At the NHL All-Star Game in 1984, in which he participated with the Wales Conference All-Stars team, he was voted Most Valuable Player of the game after his four scorer points . Maloney had led his team to a 7: 6 win against the Campbell Conference All-Stars and was largely able to take Wayne Gretzky , who scored only one point, out of the game . Due to an injury suffered on November 18, 1984 in the game against the New Jersey Devils , the majority of the 1984/85 season fell out and only scored 27 points by the end of the season. In an exchange deal between the New York Rangers and the Hartford Whalers , he was given on December 26, 1988 together with Brian Lawton and Norm Maciver in exchange for Carey Wilson and a five-round draft pick to the Whalers.
For the Hartford Whalers he completed a total of 25 games by the end of the 1988/89 season , in which he scored 14 points. In the first playoff round he lost with the team in four games against the Montréal Canadiens, of which two games were decided in overtime . After his expiring contract was not renewed, he signed on August 25, 1989 as a free agent with the New York Islanders . Maloney was under contract with the Islanders for two years and was able to qualify for the finals once with the team. After the 1990/91 season , in which he played twelve NHL games and posted five points, he finally ended his active career.
International
Maloney represented his home country at the 1985 World Cup when he finished second with the Canadian national team at the tournament. In his eight tournament appearances, he scored two points.
Managerial career
After his career as an active ice hockey player, Maloney began a career as an ice hockey official. His first position was from 1992 to 1995 as General Manager of the New York Islanders . During the 1995/96 season he was replaced by Mike Milbury . First he moved to the San Jose Sharks for a year in 1996 and then to the New York Rangers . There he took over the position of Vice President and Assistant General Manager of Glen Sather . On May 29, 2007 he was appointed general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes to succeed Michael Barnett . After the team failed to make it into the play-offs in the first two seasons, they qualified for the finals in the 2009/10 season with a franchise record of 107 points. Although the team was defeated in the first round in seven games against the Detroit Red Wings , he was named the best general manager of the year. Maloney received the NHL General Manager of the Year Award on June 2, 2010 , which was first presented in 2010.
After the 2015/16 season, Maloney was fired due to ongoing failures. Then the Calgary Flames secured his services.
